Can't say I'm surprised considering that the dire wolf evolved in the New World while gray wolves evolved in the Old World so I never considered them be close relatives beyond being apart of the same genus but now it looks like that not even true but Canis needs some drastic updating regardless.

avatar_Lanthanotus @Lanthanotus Thanks for that in depth explanation. That was very helpful to helping me get a better understanding on this.

avatar_Gothmog the Baryonyx @Gothmog the Baryonyx Thanks for sharing the information about that newly named dromaeosaurid. I had a look on wikipedia and it seems it was added to the little box thing at the bottom of the dromaeosaurid page already. Seems to be called Shri devi? Here's the paper on it for anyone curious (paywalled as usual it seems):

I suppose a new thread should be posted on it? It has fragmentary remains though, and seems to have been a specimen known since it was discovered in the 90's, and I think it was considered to belong to Velociraptor previously, before being assigned to a new genus for it?

It could just be bias from all my years on deviantART and how overrated wolves generally are, but I'm delighted that the Dire wolf isn't an oversized, stronger version of the gray wolf! Then again, I have a soft spot for canines that don't quite resemble coyotes, foxes, or wolves. I wish I could read the whole article on Nature though. Maybe it's time to renew my Paleontological society membership!

I really hope we get a figure in 2022! This would be an amazing opportunity for brands like Safari and CollectA.
