Was the mountain released in this set rereleased in any other set? The one I had was a more orange color and came with different dinosaurs that had a "marbled" look to them (but it was the same mold with the rock bridge and such). I remember being disappointed when I opened the set as a kid because it came with a "swirley" green Styracosaurus instead of a Triceratops. I may still have some of them. They were different dinosaur molds than what are seen here.

Yes the Mountain appeared in several other Marx sets  including the Comanche Pass Play Set.  In some sets the log bridge was replaced by a rock bridge, and the stream bed was unpainted.  The Giant Prehistoric Set came in gray.  Marx sets seem to have many variation.  If you still have any of this stuff, I'd love to see a picture.

Very interesting article it's great to compare how dinosaurs where marketed then compared to nowadays. As a child growing up in the 70's in the UK I am sure that I had a few poor quality knock offs of a couple of those figures.

FlawedCoil82 - What you had there probably wasn't actually Marx at all. A company called Superior Toys owned the Marx molds from 1986-1988 (but correct me if you're referring to a time period before then). Superior did Marx dinos in swirled brown, swirled gray and swirled green.

Cross-posting this here, as any other Marx afficianado should get a kick out of it:

Does anyone know what was added to the Dinosaur Playset Book, by Jeffrey Pfeiffer, in the expanded addition?

BlueKrono

That's probably my most desired book, but I have yet to see one for under triple digits range.

Uncle Rex

I received the Marx dinosaurs with the vacuform landscape for Christmas in, I believe, 1958. It came with the trees (but not the dead one and stump) and some cavemen figures. It was one of my favourite Xmas presents of all time and I played with it a LOT! I still have the dinosaurs with the exception of the brontosaurus and triceratops. The pot bellied Rex bears some teeth marks from the family dog. These sets were wonderful toys. I really enjoyed seeing the photos. Thanks!

I would have some new photos of Marx and Sinclair items, but I was robbed on Tuesday. They took my camera which still had photos I hadn't downloaded yet.

Lanthanotus

Aww, that is a pity, I hope nothing else of value got stolen from you and you're fine besides that material loss.

I'm really sorry to hear that. That is truly awful.

Wanted to remind anyone interested in my book Dinosaur Playsets: an Illustrated Guide to the Prehistoric Playsets of Marx and MPC that copies are available on eBay (as well as directly to me via PayPal ($44.99 +$3 shipping) to [email protected] and through Amazon....but preferably as a last resort as their fees have gotten ridiculous!)! Available copies are going faster than expected and the time to print more when these are gone can be a bit lengthy (as I found out after the first run sold out), so please check out the auction (there are a few sample pages on the listing) and if you are a fan of playsets (and other dino items) from Marx & MPC (of which there is VERY little info available elsewhere!), as well as Superior, Whitehall Games, Spaulding, Toy Street, etc., and also related figures & sets from companies often confused with Marx, MPC, & the like (such as Ajax, Nabisco, Ja-Ru, etc.), this is definitely the book for you! Reviews have been great (check out Amazon), I'm quite proud of it, and want to be able to share this guide to these often-neglected playsets with all you dino fans!!!

They have a custom made playset on E-Bay that has a picture of one of my Marx playsets on It's lid! https://www.ebay.com/itm/Custom-Marx-Cave-Wars-Prehistoric-Times-Dinosaur-Playset-w-45-Monsters-20-cave/183204717465?hash=item2aa7da2399:g:qRMAAOSwCmRa230S

Well crap! I hope at least that you gave them permission to use the pic of your set on their box!

In reference to an earlier post I just saw asking what all was different in the new version of my Dinosaur Playsets book, basically I just cleaned up some of the pics a bit, added a few new MPC sets I did not have room for in the first edition, and added a chapter on "lookalike" figures from Ajax, Nabisco, Tim Mee Toys, the Hong Kong dinos that often end up in Ja-Ru sets, etc.

I hate for folks to double dip, so I am giving a 30% discount on the book if you purchased the first one!
And still, you can send payment directly to me via PayPal at [email protected], or there are always a couple copies for sale on eBay. You can also get it thru Amazon (but they charge an arm & a leg per book sold so if possible please use one of the other methods! :-)  )
$44.99 + $3 shipping. If you purchased the first edition, with your discount it would be $32.99 + $3 shipping.

And if folks have been seeing copies going for 3 digits, avoid those....some folks bought up multiple copies awhile back and were selling them for outrageous prices. Buy directly from me and get the book for a reasonable cost!
thanks all!

I've known about Marx for a long time, but I'm only now beginning to fall for their appeal, having recently acquired some and been able to appreciate them 'in-hand'.

I have a question for the old guard who know Marx best. I read that authentic Marx figures are stamped with the company name, is this true across the board or is there variation between different releases?

Also, J @japfeif, I really think your amazing book deserves a thread of its own, maybe in the classifieds section (if it isn't there already, I don't see it)? That way more visitors will become aware of this important and incredibly useful volume.

Well thank you for saying that! Yeah I never made an actual thread for it...I had just posted here under "Marx Prehistoric Times", but yes definitely I think you are right....actually I'm not sure why I didn't think of that! Probably under "Books, Film, and Other Media", do you think that would be the best place?
Thank you for the recommendation!!

Oh...and to your question, no, the Marx dinos did not have the company name "Marx" . They just had the dinosaur/mammal name and their approximate size embossed on their bodies (usually the tail). Hope this helps!!!   :-)

Hi, yes, the 'Books, Film, and Other Media' section would be a perfect fit, and you have my permission to add any links or self promotion there, too (so you won't be in violation of forum rule 2, "...restrict unsolicited self-promotional content to the Classifieds section").

Thanks for the confirmation about the Marx dinos stamps. I asked because I read on avatar_DC @DC 's site (http://www.dinosaurcollectorsitea.com/marx.htm) that "Marx figures were stamped with the company name and the name of animals along with it's size.", but the ones I just acquired don't have the company name, so I wondered if that meant they were inauthentic.

CityRaptor

Guess someone's info is wrong then. The Marx Mammoth I once found for cheap in a thrift store ( and sold for a good price ) did not have the Marx stamp. Of course it could have been a re-issue.
Jurassic Park is frightning in the dark
All the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things'll harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend
Oh no
