I wrote a silly poem today and wasn't sure where to post it. So, here's a new thread for dinosaur poetry!

How the sauropod got its name

Look at that size,
what a thundering bulk!
Look at those thighs,
I declare it a hulk!

Look at that neck,
what a length, what a feature!
Look at its rump,
such a whip-tailed creature!

Look at those jaws,
on the smallest of heads!
Look at those teeth,
they remind me of pegs!

So, what shall we call it then,
something unique?
Nah, look at those toes,
it has lizard-like feet.

Halichoeres

Yes, the always well-preserved feet, definitely their most salient feature!

Are you familiar with the poetry of Leigh van Valen? He has a mildly NSFW one about dinosaur mating habits, and he used to serenade graduate students with dramatic readings thereof.

I enjoyed that avatar_DinoToyForum @dinotoyforum. Brightened up my cold dark wintry night. You might be amused to know avatar_Halichoeres @Halichoeres that as one of the elderly brigade I had to google NSFW!

Thanks!

No, I'm not familiar with Leigh van Valen, I'll look that one up!

Newt

That's a fun poem, do you have any more in the works?

Nope! I just composed this on the fly yesterday for some #SauropodSaturday content to post on Mastodon. It seemed appropriate because the server I'm on is called sauropods.win!

Ha ha, well now you're ready to sign up for Reddit!

I love it, avatar_DinoToyForum @dinotoyforum ! It's the perfect veneration of sauropods, as well as a voice of dissatisfaction with their name.  :))

There's a few more examples of published paleo poetry I know of for those interested.

Here's a whole Twitter account dedicated to sharing all the "Palaeo Poems" they can find:
https://twitter.com/Palaeopoems

I've been meaning to get the paleo poetry book Dapper Dinos for a while; it's illustrated by Diane Ramic, who you may know as the creator of The Coloring Book of (Scientifically Accurate) Paleofauna!

I've also reviewed Dinosaur Feathers, a long-form poetic look at the evolution of birds, and In The Past, a collection of brief poems about various creatures through Earth's past.

I've been working on a new dinosaur poem called "No frills dinosaur".

No quills, no frills,
no armour studs,
no duck-like bill,
no tail club.

No spines, no spikes,
no whip-like tail,
no plates or blades,
no crest, no sail.

No shaggy coat,
no bristled skin,
no lanky legs,
not fat, not thin.

Not very long,
not very short,
no shoulder prongs,
no scutes or warts.

No vicious teeth,
no sickle claw,
no thorns, no horns,
no gaping maw.

No arching neck,
no fancy beak,
not extra strong,
not frail, not weak.

No bony dome,
no pointed snout,
a dinosaur
who goes without.

Not super-sized,
not tiny-small,
the meanest dino
of them all.
