Which Mesozoic dinosaurs have good figures and which don't, according to Sim

This is a project I would like to do out of interest, and the results will be posted here for those interested.  A list of dinosaur groups that shows which animals have good figures and which don't.  This will document the good figures an animal has to allow quick comparisons, display the good options for a group and it will show which group members don't have a good figure.  It will also show all group members known from good remains.  It will also indicate the size classes of figures.  There are some rules:

1. This list is based on my opinion, which considers the opinions of others too. A figure will be considered good if it does a good job at looking like the real animal.
2. I will only count toys.
3. I will only include animals known from good remains, unless a poorly known animal has a good figure in which case it will be shown accordingly.
4. Animals will be colour coded.  Blue is for animals known from good remains with good figures.  Green is for animals with a good figure that are poorly known.  Orange is for animals without a good figure.  Navy is for animals known from good remains with satisfactory representation.  Turquoise is for animals with satisfactory representation that are poorly known.  Satisfactory representation is generally considered to be having a figure that is highly accurate, good looking, not an action figure and in a size that is fitting for the species, and that the figure doesn't have a restricted release.
5. Figures will be colour coded too.  Purple is for small figures.  Grey is for medium figures.  Pink is for very large figures.
6. I will only specify species if species in a genus look different.
7. I will include animals that need a scientific name too, they will be in quotation marks at the bottom of their group.

Let me know if something needs correcting, and discussion of anything to do with this list is welcome.

I've done the first entry, basal Theropoda, which should give you an idea of how the list will look.  I was surprised at how Papo is one of the lines that has best-represented this group.  It makes me think a Papo Herrerasaurus could be excellent.  It would also be great to have a Herrerasaurus by the other line that has best-represented this group, Wild Safari.

Sim

Oh, and I've put Chilesaurus in Theropoda following the classification on the Theropod Database.  And herrerasaurids in Theropoda following the link between them, Tawa and Coelophysis.

Sim

I've added Ceratosauria!  That will be the last one I do tonight.

CityRaptor

As did Kenner for their Jurassic Park line....the only series 1 species that never appeared in later movies. Or do JP/JW figures not count?
Jurassic Park is frightning in the dark
All the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things'll harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend
Oh no

Sim

Thanks Gwangi, I've added the Favorite Coelophysis.  As for JP/JW figures, they can count but I think most of them, while good toys, are not quite accurate representations of the animals, so they don't make it into the list.  Off the top of my head, out of JP/JW figures, quite accurate ones are the Kenner Parasaurolophus and Pachycephalosaurus and I would have to look at others again to see if there are any more.  avatar_CityRaptor @CityRaptor, would you know which JP/JW toys are quite accurate to the real animals?

I've updated the first post and removed the rule about size, as thinking about it again I think it's better to include large good figures of small animals.

Eatmycar

I mean, Mattel's Pachyrhinosaurus is VERY good, frankly.

I'd also suggest Papo's Ceratosaurus, while not perfect, is very respectable.

Sim

Thanks Eatmycar, I'll add the Mattel Pachyrhinosaurus when I'm on that genus.  I considered adding the Papo Ceratosaurus but didn't because it has a gap in the head that you can see through when viewed from the side as a result of the articulated jaw I guess, but it's possible to have an articulated jaw without that gap so I don't consider it made well enough.  The Papo Compsognathus has this problem too.

I've added Megalosauroidea to the list and added a Misc. Theropoda category which will be expanded as I go through Theropoda.

Sim

I've completed Allosauroidea and expanded the Misc. Theropoda section.  Unlike how it's been going so far, in Allosauroidea nearly everything has a good figure.  The only ones that don't are Asfaltovenator and one I had forgotten about: Scipionyx, which Andrea Cau found to be a carcharodontosaur when its juvenile characteristics are dealt with appropriately.

I've decided I will only use purple for planned figures, I won't put an animal's name in purple.

I've done Tyrannosauroidea now.  The number of good figures of Tyrannosaurus compared to everyone else is just... wow.

Faelrin

avatar_Sim @Sim Off to a great start. This will definitely be a helpful resource to have.

Sinosauropteryx (assuming it is still considered within Compsognathidae) has the mini "Little Dinosaurs" PNSO figure. Its coloration is a little off on the face, but the rest of it is pretty accurate. Dilong also has a figure from Creative Beast Studio, but in 1/6 scale. Favorite also has a Guanlong, but Creative Beast Studio's is clearly the most accurate option on the market currently.

Here's some from Mattel that might be okay enough to add, give or take a few issues aside:

-2023 Borealopelta
-2023, 2022 Genydectes serus
-2023 Gigantspinosaurus
-2023 Herrerasaurus (the newest sculpt)
-2023 Orkoraptor
-2023 Metriacanthosaurus (HC only)
-2022, 2021, 2019 Coelurus
-2022, 2021, 2020, 2019 "Dracorex"
-2022 Dreadnoughtus
-2022 Megaraptor
-2022 Therizinosaurus
-2021, 2020 Alioramus
-2021 Chialingosaurus
-2021, 2019 Mononykus
-2021, 2019, 2018 Monolophosaurus (not the new Camp Cretaceous head sculpt, but the original mold)
-2020 Gasosaurus
-2020 Majungasaurus
-2018 Microceratus (or Graciliceratops)

There's also figures of Eoraptor and Stegouros coming in 2024, which might be okay enough to add to this list.

Though it still needs updating for 2023 figures, and 2024's, I do have a list of most of the mainline figures, in case it would be helpful. Otherwise, my 2023 and 2024 threads might be of use.

For Tyrannosaurus, you definitely should add REBOR's Kiss and Tusk.

For Qianzhousaurus you only included the mini from PNSO, but PNSO also has a Qianzhousaurus in their Prehistoric Animal Models line.

Also there was a leaked photo of prototypes of the Albertosaurus and Gorgosaurus from PNSO, so you could include a Gorgosaurus from PNSO as a figure that is yet to be released.

I'm not sure what qualifies a figure for this list or what its exact purpose is. The rules don't say. There are many weird omissions and additions that make the list appear inconsistent. Example, you include the Schleich Baryonyx but not the Safari Baryonyx. For Acrocanthosaurus you leave off Safari's, CollectA's, and Battat's. Is this just your personal list of favorites? I know you know these figures exist.

Well what a coincidence, PNSO's Gorgosaurus is officially revealed today.

avatar_Gwangi @Gwangi, the purpose of this list is to document the good figures an animal has to allow quick comparisons, display the good options for a group and show which group members don't have a good figure.  It will also show all group members known from good remains.  I've modified the original post to include this, sorry it wasn't clearer.

As for what qualifies a figure for this list, it's a high level of accuracy without obvious inaccuracies.  I've been assessing each figure myself, but I'm open to other people's opinions.

I included the Schleich Baryonyx because I don't see anything wrong with it, while the Safari Baryonyx has too few and too large teeth in the upper jaw plus it represents an older interpretation of Baryonyx's snout as being relatively short in comparison to known spinosaurid snouts which are known to be relatively long.

As for Acrocanthosaurus, Safari's has feet that are too large - that's one quality that will tend too stop a figure from getting into the list.  CollectA's Acrocanthosaurus has hips that are much too wide - I think I won't include any CollectA figure with that inaccuracy.  Battat's Acrocanthosaurus is good, so maybe I should include it, although it has a pronated hand - I've been avoiding including theropods with pronated hands, and its teeth are too small too (I think this was a factory revision as the resin prototype had teeth of the correct length).
