Utahraptor? could city vs state meaning be lost in translation?

I don't know why but the first thing that came to my mind was Australovenator.

  • Hunter: check
  • Singular characteristic: check (giant hand claw)
  • Distant land: check (I interpret this as meaning distant from China)
  • Name honours a city: check (wintonensis)

I don't know whether it was found in a canyon though. Also it's a bit weird that they'd make this genus after having made Megaraptor.

Utahraptor sounds like a good possibility as well – perhaps a more likely one.
One day we will know the truth about Spinosaurus... but not today.

"From distant lands" I shall assume it's not from China, so...
"my name honors a city" leads me to Utahraptor, despite Utah is a state, "singular characteristic" might refer to their sickle claw.
My other guesses include Maip Macrothorax (elongated shadow-> "death shadow" Maip's meaning), and Qianzhousaurus.
*As it mentions being a "stealthy hunter", any herbivore is discarded.

Turkeysaurus

What about Dakotaraptor? : It has everything utahraptor has but also keeps it's elongated body of smaller raptors. There is also city named Dakota in Nebraska.

It's status is a mystery.

OHMYGOD, it could be my desired Concavenator!!
A mighty hunter, with a long shadow and a very singular characteristic (its double hump-crests) ....

... and it honours the capital and province of Cuenca. And distant ... yes, from there, yes!

If that is true, i know a user here who will be quite happy :)

Turkeysaurus

Concavenator sounds best so far.

A Concavenator of the same caliber as the Majungasaurus would be sublime.

Agree. Just the base of the Majungasaurus, with some changes in anatomy and it would look amazing.
Haolonggood has replied "maybe" to my comment! I keep my fingers crossed (very crossed).

thomasw100

The genus name Concavenator means "hunter from Cuenca" and there is a hint to a hunter in that riddle.

Turkeysaurus

"Twenty kilometers from Cuenca and near the town of Mohorte, you'll find one of the most impressive landscapes of the province, the Torcas of Palancares.

Huge torcas between thirty and five hundred meters in diameter in calcareous soil are scattered throughout the terrain across 6 square kilometers. Circular collapses and sinkholes with impressive stone walls, the floors of these pits filled with brushwood, pine trees and other greenery. They vary in size between 40 and 500 meters across, some measuring up to 100 meters deep."

This is where Concavenator lived

If they can close the mouth or make the teeth more detailed and sharper?

thomasw100

They posted another riddle: "From times of old, my reign was peaceful. Great heart, like a living tree I was. Deep footprints in my walk through time I left".

I start to suspect that they may have already seen the 2025 catalogue.

ceratopsian

Altithorax means "deep/high chest". Though that's not exactly great heart.

Turkeysaurus

Quote from: ceratopsian on December 26, 2024, 12:16:32 PMAltithorax means "deep/high chest". Though that's not exactly great heart.

From iknowdino.com
"Had large hearts and high blood pressure to pump blood up its neck to its brain (heads were held up high), so its blood pressure was possibly 400 mm Mercury, 3-4 times higher than a humans"

I remember a lot of controversy about heart size of sauropods especially Brachiosaurus because of it's fame and it was biggest dinosaur known back then.

We also know Haolonggood will produce Brachiosaurus or Giraffatitan. A living tree. High Browser.

Samrukia

these riddles are entertaining, i like it

Not the Brachiosaurus this soon, please. I don't have the money for it right now.

It was heartbreaking enough realizing that I probably won't get the Argentinosaurus...

I'm thinking Sauroposeidon for the latest teaser, Poseidon being a god "During my rule", "Like a living tree"=very tall, and "I left deep footprints through time" Paluxysaurus has well know trackways in Texas and has been synonomized with Sauroposeidon.

DavidJamesArmsby

I also immediately thought of Sauroposiden. I have actually been researching the species a bunch recently, and it has a bunch of super interesting trackways assigned to it. The original material (Neck vertebrae, I think) was misidentified as being fossilised tree trunks too. Can't make any sense of the heart stuff though.

ceratopsian

Sauroposeidon sounds like a strong contender then.
