Quote from: oscars_dinos on January 03, 2025, 04:11:14 PMnew material for spino... yeah this is why I hold off on getting any figures of this dino

I've said it before but you really have to treat each release of a toy or reproduction of a dinosaur as a snapshot of that moment in time. These things are ALWAYS in flux, even with well known dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus, you get chunkier rexes, or lipped vs. not lipped, etc.

There never will be a "definitive" version of any dinosaur. While some can get closer than others, there is always info we can't have and will never know, and there's always the potential for something taken as gospel to be flipped on its head in the future.

Spinosaurus is actually one of the more fun dinosaurs to collect toys of, because it's changed so much that you can have ten Spinosaurus toys and they all look completely different, based on what was understood of the dinosaur at the time.

But even the idea of including lips for theropods is relatively new for most figure renditions, and defaulting to feathered for certain dinosaur figures has really only been happening for the last ten years or so (mayyyybe 15 in rare examples).

It's always in flux and always will be, for all dinosaurs. Spinosaurus is just one of the more prominent examples.

Most dinosaurs, especially fragmentary ones might change dramatically but with spinosaurus i think it's mystery has been beginning to resolve since last decade. So it's understandable to wait a little more.

I have this Dinosaurs! Magazine from 90s , it's unbelievable how much changed since , even some of the things they say "we'll never know" has been found. When i was a child reading that was discouraging, now it's encouraging  :D

He says this every year. I'm not holding my breathe for anything big changing.

Could not care less for that either.

It's definitely something I've been thinking about lately. Surely it beats having to put down another Museum Line price when PNSO releases their next rex. That being said, it's something I've been putting off, so it's probably a good time to look into that a little further.
Looking at other customised Camerons on the forum is selling me on the idea  :))

Wouldn't customizing + shipping cost similar to brand New PNSO or more?

I don't know much about prices (or the process in general) yet, so I'm not sure. I'd have to look into it a little bit more. Wouldn't be surprised though. It's mainly what's been keeping me from looking into lip-modding more seriously.

Yes/ It's not cheap, putting lips on a figure, if it's going to be done properly. I sent five of my theropods to Aaron at Bravo Models in Mexico, who did a splendid job on each. Shipping was pricey, but it ensured safe delivery. For me, completely worth it, never had a doubt. Also I use the services of Chris, a friend and local artist, who does most of my less complex alterations and painting. His specialty is Warhammer figures and his work is amazing. He's super affordable and I deliver and pick up the commissions myself. So that's two approaches to the issue.

As I get some of my figures repainted (and sometimes seam lines covered) by a professional once in a while, I think I can comment on this.

For a model of the size of the Tyrannosaurus rex, I would estimate that the costs for adding lips and a full repaint would approximately equal the costs of a new one. If it would be just adding lips and partial repaint just of the head it will be less, maybe some 50 USD.

But then on top comes shipment back and forth, which would be another 30 to 40 USD, depending on where you are located.

Yes, give or take, that would be in the right ballpark. A local artist is a bit of a game changer, if that option is available.
