Okay, I'm a few years older than my wife. So she was talking about a brunch/luncheon my friend is having on Mother's Day. She mentioned that the friend is making a quiche. I said, "Real men don't eat quiche," referring to the book of the same name from the 1980s.

She'd never heard of it.

So how many people can actually remember Real Men Don't Eat Quiche being published, or am I really dating myself here?

At the risk of making you feel old, that book was published about seventeen years before I was born  :*D

ceratopsian

I remember it. A memorable title. But I never read it.

Now I really do feel old. :-\

avatar_ceratopsian @ceratopsian I never read it either. Not in my choices of preferred reading.

Sorry, I was born in 1987 & this thread is the 1st I've heard of it. I'm guessing the book hasn't aged well (or is the title meant to be ironic?).

I was aware of the phrase, didn't know it was a book.

Torvosaurus

It was a satirical look at stereotypical types of masculinity, according to reviews, published in 1982. It spent 50 some weeks on the NY Times best seller list and sold 1.6 million copies. I actually am surprised that it is new to so many people.

New to me, but I'm not from the Anglosphere so that would explain a lot.

I think that sort of examination of social mores can have a relatively short shelf life, no matter how popular they are at the time, especially if satirical.

Yes, I remember Real Men Don't Eat Quiche.

I also remember "Abracadabra" by the Steve Miller Band, The A-Team, and the mini-series "V"...

Of course back then, a gallon of gas and a pack of cigarettes were the same price, 75 cents. I was hitchhiking to work one day, and a lady picked me up in a Pinto, with a "caution: inflammable" sticker on the back. I was wearing spun vinyl parachute pants, a neon yellow half-shirt and 28 string bracelets, on each arm. Everything else was beige. It was the 80's.

Libraraptor

Never heard of either the book or the phrase :))

If written today, maybe it would be Real Men Don't Eat Carbs.

And "Call Me" and "Pop Muzik". 🙂 I remember 55 cents a gallon.

I think my favorite thing of that moment in time is the animated film Heavy Metal, and the soundtrack for it, especially "Working In A Coalmine" by DEVO.

Torvosaurus

The only decent song Don Felder soloed for comes off that album. I'm not sure if I like the zombies on a plane or the final scene the best. As for "Working in a Coalmine", my youngest daughter remembers that from when I was building my fish room 20 years ago and still jams out to it today. My favorite is "Veteran of the Psychic Wars". I like BOC in general though.
