The sign at the museum says it was sculpted by Charlie McGrady. I guess the 'CM' in CM studios is his abbreviation ? It's a wonderful model!

I like these museum threads and I'm still kind of a bit sad that we didn't manage to give these museum reports a category of their own. It would be so nice to view all the world's wonderful museums in one place (... and unique too, I think).
Maybe one of the administrators could reconsider this and there's still hope for the future.

Because my mother was born in Zürich (the reason why I also have a Swiss passport) and I have been spending a lot of time there during
my childhood & youth, I have a special relation to the city's wonderful Dinosaur museum (and the also wonderful St. Gallener Bratwurst!).
I have been to Zürich for a few days and took pics of things that are new or that I haven't shown here before.

The tour goes on .......

Aathal Museum  Part 10 ~ spectacular Ammonites


   Epperitites impendens
                     > the dark suture lines contrast sharply with the white calcite filled chambers.




   Placenticeras meeki
                     > extremly complicated suture lines; this suture pattern ultimately results from the
                        ammonite's tendency to build a strong, yet lightweight chamber structure.




   Pachydiscus catarinae
                     > few ammonites like this one, featuring spectacularly beautiful suture lines,
                        were found in the Cretaceous sediments of the Baja California in Mexico.




   Placenticeras meeki
                     > the ammonite's inner shell, after seventy million years, still shows the mother of pearl
                        luster combined with pink and turquoise colour patches.




   Sphenodiscus sp.
                     > Sphenodiscus is the ammonite with the most beautiful suture lines;
                        the lines remind us of the Greek letter Omega or Aom of ancient India.




   Asteroceras confusum
                     > the classic locality near Lyme Regis and Charmouth on England's Southern coast
                        is the source of some of the world's finest and best known ammonites.




   Plesiacanthoceras wyomingensis
                     > this horned ammonite was found near the Howe Ranch where the Siber team
                        also exavated the original Dinosaurs on display at the Aathal museum.




   Arietites bucklandi
                     > ribbed ammonites like this one must have struck early 19th century scientists as the
                        typical ammonite; they compared their shape to the symbol of the ancient
                        Egyptian god Ammon and called the entire group Ammonites.




   Sphenodiscus lenticularis
                     > my personal favourite; natural forces of geology intensified the original
                        mother of pearl iridescence to an unworldly beautiful opalescence.

   This sauropod is new to the museum.
   A Galeamopus of 18 m length called 'Max'. It's the fourth diplodocoid in the Howe Ranch room (well, even the fifth if
   you count the Europasaurus baby) and as with 'H.Q. Eins' and the rearing Diplodocus impossible to take full length pics of.

Grüezi! Time to revive this thread. Two years had gone by quickly and I returned to Zürich visiting the Aathal Museum again.
