This has been in the news last couple of days, a huge sauropod skeleton found in a Portuguese garden:

It was nice of the BBC to also remind us that sauropods had long necks and four legs!

My mother showed me this on the news she watches. ABC or something like that. I died inside a little when they called it a Brachiosaurus. Reminds me of the recent freshwater plesiosaur find my dad showed me, where they called it a dinosaur, while simultaneously giving fuel to the lochness monster hoax. Why can't mainstream media (at least here in the US) do the slightest ounce of research when it comes to prehistoric animals, and also stop giving out misinformation while at it (which is a huge issue in itself, disregarding this particular subject matter)?

That said, that must have been a very exciting thing to find in one's backyard. Very much looking forward to learning about how much of it they recover and any papers going forward. A very important find to flesh out the european Jurassic fossil record as well.

Newt

Heh, the article I found for it featured a photo of a Papo T. rex. ::)   It seems news agencies find this stuff important enough to report, but not important enough to expend any effort on.

Pretty cool, though. It will be interesting to see what it actually turns out to be.

You would think the news agencies would pass these stories to their science writers, wouldn't you? The BBC has some very good ones and some great radio shows on its World Service. I suppose the article might just be over simplifying things though and underestimating the audience.

Agree, it will be interesting to see how much of the skeleton is recovered and hopefully it will end up on display one day in Lisbon.

Halichoeres

Very cool! I wonder if it will have feet. They're so often missing in these cases.
