Which is kinda silly, given that one can not copyright a real animal. But depending who you ask, Saurophaganax is Allosaurus anyways.
Errr no, the original sculpt of the allosaurus toy is copyright to Papo, I wasn't talking about the real animal.

Btw, I heard that it's dangerous to buy bootlegs from Chinese/Asian countries because they haven't gone through proper safety checks, and may contain dangerous substances such as lead. Is this true or a load of hooey?

As for the dangerous part: I think it is true. Also various phalates.

As for the sculpt: I don't think that renaming it would actually make it any more legal.
Jurassic Park is frightning in the dark
All the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things'll harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend
Oh no

I think the bootlegger hoped to avoid getting any lawsuits by giving it a less well known name, perhaps slipping under the radar.

I imagine the bootleggers would use an excuse like this:
"oh it's not a rip off of your toy, it's a Saurophaganax. Totally different animal"

But eh, in the end it's just speculation.

Maybe. I don't how that copyright law actually works, given the large amount of Third Party Transformers out there, which are essentially expensive bootlegs. To name an example.
