well it's been a wet and rainy day here in Kentucky, so since I'd been planning to a 1:30 cameroceras, I decided to slap one together for practice, hopefully when I start concentrating on these I will have some super sculpy.
the design is based on nautiluses, but I'm not sure if I like it, when I make the sculpt I want to cast I may go for colossal squid style tentacles, minus the claws
(the coke can is for size reference, and I was thirsty)

Balaur

Nice orthocone! I like the nautilus design!

Thanks, I chose it because they are their closet living relatives, but I realize it is unlikely they had the fourty some tentacles that the nautalis has

This is good, looks very detailed and I like the base too. I like the scratches and bumps along the surface of the shell, it reminds me of those razor clams you find on beaches ;)
What's your sculpting medium?

[Off Nick and Eddie's reactions to the dinosaurs] Oh yeah "Ooh, aah", that's how it always starts. But then there's running and screaming.

{about the T-Rex) When he sees us with his kid isn't he gonna be like "you"!?

right now, original sculpy, though I find it a bit too soft, any sculptors one here have a preferred medium?

I prefer Super Sculpey, far superior to original Sculpey.

Well good I have a brick of it on the way

Great to see an Orthocone, any Orthocone gets a thumbs up from us.  As to tentacles we have always presumed ten, but Cephalopods are not our speciality so I would not like to bet the farm on that one.

brandem

thanks all, and about the tentacles, when I get around to doing my finished model it will definitely have the belemnitida arrangement of tentacles, minus the claws of course.
the orthocone have always been one of my favorite local fossils (nothing against crinoids and brachiopods), but hopefully the finished version of this guy will become part of a set of local animal models from the Ordovician, Coniferous, and Mesozoic.
