Mattel - New for 2023

Probably the best pics we've gotten of both of these so far. Looking like must haves for sure. The coloration on the Brachiosaurus looks much more like the Stan Winston Studios animatronic and maquette here.

The Triceratops is a clear upgrade over the HC one, despite losing the limb articulation and animatronic-like markings on the head. Instead it has gained painted scutes, and jaw articulation, finally adult sized/in scale, and might even be a rubber body like on the classic Kenner figure as has been rumored.

Holly molly, it's as big as the extreme chomping T.rex mold...

Isn't that a little bit too big, Mattel? You only had to make it a bit bigger than the Pentaceratops...

I'm extremely disappointed at that Triceratops. We were all cheering for a bigger, somewhat almost 1/18th scale Trike since the HC was too small, and didn't have an articulated mouth. I don't need another colossal unless it's a sauropod, and THAT is but a necessary stretch.

It ainĀ“t a colossal, looks about the size of an extreme chomping T.rex, there is one (of it's many retools) right next to the Triceratops...

avatar_EmperorDinobot @EmperorDinobot avatar_MLMjp @MLMjp is right. It's a mainline figure. Not a Super Colossal. This is definitely the big in scale/adult sized one folks have been asking for years now. This is definitely a tad bigger then the Pentaceratops, likely similar to the BotM adult Triceratops in size.

I saw the new indominus for the first time at Target yesterday. It was already on sale and I just couldn't resist. Easily one of my favorite mainline releases in a while. I'm sure an HC version is coming but this will tide me over until then. Now to regime my old versions!

Blade-of-the-Moon

Quote from: MLMjp on June 13, 2023, 11:20:14 AMI was looking forward to this, but that size decrease is a bit too much. I always thought the original figure was a bit oversized, but this new one is clearly undersized.

Seems like I will join the wait for the HC one...But I still want Spino and Giga before the I.rex.

It was pointed out to me on facebook that this one actually scales with the standard line figures, like the T-Rex we get in all the sets.  The previous larger figure is more to scale with the bigger electronic Rexes. That said I doubt any of them are really all that in scale lol Makes you wonder what size the HC one, if and when it appears will be.

For 37.00 I think it's worth it. Seems pretty fun too, I actually just ordered mine online from Target last night. Oddly they seem to have actually got these in pretty quick.

Still not impressed enough with the HC Brachiosaurus to shell out the money for it when I already have the beautiful Legacy toy.

The Trike is cool but I'm content with the HC one, which scales far better with the one we see in Jurassic Park and the human action figures.

I want to see if it can really stand erect on it's own as people are saying. That would be a factor for me in buying one.

I still think the Triceratops in JP was a younger animal, not a full adult. Iron Studios blew there version of it up quite a bit and it's one of the nicest recreations made. I have so many versions of it, Prime 1, Horizon? I can't recall the company, it was made in Japan, big vinyl model.  My brain is having issues before lunch. lol

I definitely think it was a younger animal in JP. The one in TLW when it wrecks the camp is more or less adult sized, and that's part of the reason this appeals to me. The HC one works (lack of jaw articulation aside) as the smaller sick Triceratops in Jurassic Park, and this can work as the bigger one in TLW.

Edit: Added a pic of the JP one, to help show the size difference between the two.

Glad you shared that image avatar_Faelrin @Faelrin because now I can do this...

Looks pretty good. I never understood the dismay over the size of the HC Trike. It's supposed to be scaled down from the one in the original movie, not the actual animal. It might be a *pinch* too small but not drastically so. The lack of jaw articulation is still a shortcoming though.

Yeah I was never bothered by the size of the HC for this reason, and I've tried to point it to people in the past. They really nailed the design, and for the most part (jaw aside) the ability to pose it as the sick Triceratops. Both are going to be great figures to display alongside each other I think, similar to the BotM sub adult and adult Triceratops I think. Just need a proper baby based on the unused JP design (although I think that was at least finally used in TLW), to have a complete Triceratops family of sorts.

Edit: Upon closer inspection I noticed the Habitat Defender Triceratops does have a similar sort of marking around the eyes as on the HC Triceratops, but it is green in color instead of the more film accurate grey on the HC one. As far as I can tell, TLW design retained that sort of look for the animatronic head.

Here's some pics of the baby I mentioned earlier (not many out there I could find):

A better pic of the animatronic I think:

Finished animatronic I think?:

I think this pic is actually of the animatronic from the front? Not sure.

Jurassic Park maquette (the Papo baby figure is pretty spot on now that I think of it):

HC Brachiosaurus is a big pass.  Very disappointing....what's with the black eye?

The big Triceratops is interesting....I have the BOTM adult so i'll have to think how I can justify getting this one too, it will probably be 1/3 the price of the BOTM.  This Mattel Trike has scales on the frill, which the BOTM is sorely missing.

Not sure if this is old news but here is an Amazon listing for HD Triceratops with a bunch of pics.  Almost exactly the size of the BOTM, according to the quoted dimensions.  Surprising....way to go Mattel.

Here's some pics of the Jurassic Park Brachiosaurus animatronic and maquette I dug up while gathering some of those baby Triceratops pics. In case anyone wants to compare it to the HC Brachiosaurus (or even the older Legacy one). Reposting the pic avatar_Prehistory Resurrection @Prehistory Resurrection shared for an easier direct comparison:

All pics above grabbed from the Jurassic Vault website, and movie-screencaps. Comparing these further to the HC figure, the head definitely seems to take inspiration from the animatronic. Both even have the sunken eyes look to them, and as far as I can tell the eyes should be a glossy black. Coloration wise seems to be a mix from the animatronic, maquette, final ILM film design, maybe even the concept art as well.

Try "BOTM Torosaurus" sized lol. I don't have the Trike yet, and I never go near the Torosaurus because of how heavy it is.

The Brachiosaurus is nice, but the neck's gonna tear. I wanted to asd that the wings of HC Geosternbergia are from the same rubbery plastic the '93 Tyrannosaurus' skin is made of. I don't know how flexible it is though.

I saw the baby trike at Disney's Universal Studios in a "how special effects are made" exhibit back in 2006.

andrewsaurus rex

the BOTM Triceratops adult and Torosaurus use the same body....only the skulls are different.  In actuality , the Torosaurus should be smaller than the Triceratops, at least to be accurate with the fossil record.

Faelrin

#1297
avatar_EmperorDinobot @EmperorDinobot The adult Triceratops shares the same main body sculpt (if not the limbs as well) so they are roughly the same size. Only thing that deviates is the frill/skull size. I know, I got to see the prototypes for them in person back in 2019.

In fact here's some pics from when I saw them back then (the Torosaurus was unpainted at this point in time), in case these are helpful to anyone. I originally shared these in the BotM ceratopsians thread way back in 2019, but that'll take me all day to dig that back up, lol. Was much faster to find them on my imgur instead:

Edit: To add I think the BotM sub adult and adult Triceratops comparison makes sense too, since the HC is roughly around the size of the BotM sub adult Triceratops, and the previous electronic ones too (like the 2018 Roarivores figure). Both my BotM Triceratops figures are in storage atm, and I don't have the display for them here atm. I do hope to get my Styracosaurus and Diabloceratops out soon though.

Flaffy

More close up shots of the HC Brachiosaurus. Really liking the colours, easy improvement over the original mainline. Dunno where that red eye came from though when the movie design had considerably darker sclera. I'm still wary of that bendable neck, the folding rubber in the 3rd pic makes me anxious. But I have to say the recent pics makes it look a heck of a lot better than the initial promo shots.

But obviously the big question is, again, if it's nice enough to justify replacing the stunning Legacy collection release.

avatar_Faelrin @Faelrin Thanks for the comprehensive comparisons with the movie production and film designs! Now I'm wondering if the HC version has an accurate head sculpt or not. It feels a bit wide around the mouth, but I can't be sure atm.

Gwangi

The picture of it rearing almost sells it but then the last one with the wrinkled neck ruins it.
