Dear all,

I would like to show you the awesome scale sculptures of EoFauna, a new scientific research team. The group is formed by international researchers, creatives and specialists principally focused on prehistoric animals, who offer to his costumers a wide knowledge in biology, paleontology, metrology, design, illustration and modelism.

The sculpted figurines from anatomically accurate reconstructions made on computer and based on properly described individuals. The result is the most accurate and realistic representation ever created.

These are amazing, thanks for the information  :)

The hairy tail tips are rather impressive!

Amazing and Impresive. They are the best sculptures that I have seen :o.
[Off Nick and Eddie's reactions to the dinosaurs] Oh yeah "Ooh, aah", that's how it always starts. But then there's running and screaming.

{about the T-Rex) When he sees us with his kid isn't he gonna be like "you"!?

Just found a fly in the ointment - as good as these figures are, they are for sale for 199 EUROS EACH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry guy, thanks for teasing us, but 99 EUROS would be pushing it.  At 199 Euros, well, good luck selling them.

I somehow feel that the DTF members will NOT be impressed by what I can only describe as a TOTAL RIPOFF, in my opinion!

Well, this outrage has got me thinking - let's contact Angie Rodriguez and whoever else makes Shapeways figures.  I bet she could make them and sell them for less than half of what these folks are charging.  That would be a great comeuppance.  And they dare to call Americans greedy!

I felt the same way--very nice, but for 1:48 scale, at 200 Euros, that's just not going to happen.

This is where the distinction between resin models and vinyl figures becomes a source of confusion. A line of museum-quality models like these will typically require an investment of several thousand dollars on the part of the company. These are not large companies like Papo, with the resources to finance mass production, though one could certainly argue the quality gap between vinyl figures and resin models is getting narrower. This company is likely trying to market to a smaller number of collectors and museums. The truth is that if you want a fully finished resin model with this level of quality, this price range is actually quite common and reasonable.

Simon

Dan, 199 Euros will buy you Shane Foulkes 1/15 scale TRex.  These folks didn't even have to SCULPT their elephants, their designed them on the computer, then had them printed out.  Lets say it cost them $100+ to print out the master copy (using Krentz' TRex 1/40 scale as an example);   Now if they plan to have EACH copy printed out, then heck yes its gonna be expensive - and self-defeating.  There is no way they will sell enough to make a profit.

If they do what Krentz did - print one Master and then have that one moulded and cast, the price would come down.  Even at a relatively smallish 1/48 scale I would pay $100 for each one of these - but not anywhere twice that.

They are pricing themselves right out of the market.  At that price I could get one of Jon Rader's 1/20 scale Columbian Mammoths, AND have money left over to put towards  another kit.

Dan

I can understand your frustration, but I do have some experience with this. Printing a digital model actually can cost thousands of dollars. Molds and casts, followed by professional paint application, can easily add thousands of dollars more. Even when all this is done, they will still want to earn on their investment. It's okay if you still feel their prices are high, of course. As mass manufactured figures increase in quality, this kind of thing will become less common, pushing itself "out of the market", as you say.

I have to agree with Simon and some others - as wonderful as those figures are - the price is a complete non-starter for myself. I'll be honest - I'm not into elephants & their relatives but if the price was substantively lower then maybe I would buy one. Then again, I also will state that I am a pterosaur fan more than anything else - so I would probably lean to spending for that....

Price is fine for museums but for the average collector it is a bit much. I wish them well as I can appreciate what they are doing but I just don't see them succeeding for mass markets.

Are you or were you an ebay seller?  The user name mountainlu seems to ring a bell.

And please understand--the models are incredibly well-done; it's that the price point is beyond what the majority of even die-hard collectors will pay (me, I'm more of a carnivora person, so elephants are also less interest for me there too!).

Mountain

Nice to meet you again. I'm the e-bay's seller and buyer you mentioned.
Thank you very much.

Mammuthus

Hello,

Well, I'm Asier, the scientific adviser of these models. You have to know that these sculptures are made after hard scientific research (bibliographic research, visit museum collections to measure bones and skeletons...). They are based on real complete scientifically described skeletons. First, a technical restoration is made bone by bone, based on real bone measurements under pinpoint accuracy, and proboscideans soft/internal anatomy knowledge. Then a 3D is performed based on skeletal reconstruction to improve the muscles structure and general shape, finally 3Ds are used as a guide to make the sculpture by hands, by our sculptor and then is paint by our painter. The figurines are the most accurate you can find nowadays by far. There are not toys, but very high quality sculptures.

Hope you understand.

Best,

ihatefeathers144

While I can understand the trepidation about the pricing of these figures, I must say that these are some of the finest sculptures I have ever seen. The African elephant in particular looks like a living animal, an outstanding paint job! With all due respect to Simon, there is no way a Shapeways figure will come close to this. I am wondering if there is an unpainted option? That would be a little less pricy I think.

Probably yes, we are considering the possibility
I definitely would consider purchasing the unpainted model. No disrespect to your painter, I like to paint my own stuff & I could not bring myself to cover up his wonderful work. Any dinosaur models planned?

Mammuthus

Ok, you can write us to by the website contact section and telling us in what or in which ones would you be interest.

Thank you  :)
