The Reaping lizards: The Therizinosaurs

When it comes to bizarre dinosaurs, the groups Therizinosaurids are surely up there ;D. With a tiny head atop a long neck, a short tail, a pot belly, four-toed feet, a beaky mouth, feathers, and gigantic claws, this animal looks more like a child's wild imagination or a turkey on steroids rather than a real animal. This combination of weird and unusual body parts is what confused scientist for a long time in identifying the animal.

The most famous, and also the largest, of the group is Therizinosaurus. Discovered in 1948 in the Gobi desert of Mongolia, this creature was huge! The first fossils found consist of an arm, and a hand with a giant claw. At first, it was not believed to be a dinosaur at all.

Despite its many weird parts, it is the presence of these gigantic claws that is the most distinctive feature of these animals (although not all members have the oversized claw). Later find also showed evidence that these animals, at least some of them, were covered with a coat of primitive down-like feathers as well as longer quill-like feathers.

Therizinosaurs are believed to be mainly herbivores. It is believed that they used their gigantic claws in a manner very similar to the prehistoric ground sloth.

The group ranged in size from small, such as Beipiaosaurus (7.3 ft in length), to the gigantic Therizinosaurus, which at an approximate 33–40 ft. long, was among the largest of the theropods known.

Safari released the first figure of Therizinosaurus ( along with two other Asian dinosaur) in their Dinosaurs of China series way back in the 1990's. Since then, there has been a slow increase of therizinosaurus figures as other companies notice this unique group dinosaur. Companies such as Bullyland, CollectA, FameMaster, Kaiyodo, Yujin, Chap Mae, SEGA, just to name a few,  have all released their own versions of this fascinating dinosaur.

Here they are, the Therizinosaurus, Beipiaosarus, Falcarius, and Nothronychus that resides in my collection ;)
Enjoy and happy collecting :D

I showed you mine, now show me yours  ;D ;D ;D

A great group of dinosaurs, more nicely represented in the toy world than even I realized. Hopefully we see one of these in JP4! In my collection I only have the Safari Great Dinos collection Therizinosaurus, the DoC Therizinosaurus and the  Carnegie Beipiaosaurus. I need to get the CollectA and Geoworld Therizinosaurus and the Falcarius as well.

The only figures I like out of all of these is the Carnegie Beipiaosaurus (no, I don't even like the CollectA Therizinosaurus) The rest are either naked, have deformed anatomy or just badly sculpted (in my opinion) :-\

Boki, don´t forget to get yourself the Bullyland Therizinosaurus, too! It´s not scientifically correct, but looks nice nevertheless. Also watch out for the new Schleich Therizinosaurus, who is one real good Schleich figure.
As for me, I have the Carnegie and the Bullyland and the Chap Mei one.

Jetoar

I have Therizinosaurus from Salvat, Collecta and Bullyland. Bullyland figure is one of my favorites  ^-^.
[Off Nick and Eddie's reactions to the dinosaurs] Oh yeah "Ooh, aah", that's how it always starts. But then there's running and screaming.

{about the T-Rex) When he sees us with his kid isn't he gonna be like "you"!?

Is the Falcarius really 1/40 scale like Geoworld says?

Still one of my alltime favourite dinosaur groups!

CollectA's 2014 deluxe therizinosaurus has arrived!I tell ya, I was not expecting this guy to be that big! Great big figure, much much better in person than in any photos I have seen. They must have used a different material since this is very light despite it's size. You can see how big he is with the photos with the Papo spino for scale :))

Boki, you can´t imagine how cool it feels to look at your pictures as fascinated as I used to for the first time six or so years ago. As long as you are still around here, everything´s fine!

Gwangi

Your pictures are the first I've seen that make me actually want this model. I was put off by the feathers on the head and arms but your pictures really do show that it really is a beautiful model otherwise.

Does anyone else feel the Schleich Therizinosaurus head resembles a dragon!  The toy looks like it belongs in its own slasher film!  Dinosaur's Play Chucky's Back!

I've seen it at walmart, it's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. :)
I may not like feathered dinosaurs and stumpy legged Spinosaurs, but I will keep those opinions to myself, I will not start a debate over it, I promise. 😇

Same here. It isn't as much of a disgrace as I thought. ;)
