Am somewhat disappointed in the Collecta this year. I know we've beat this subject to death but I will not buy figures with stands. The smaller figures like Koreaceratops I can understand but as for the larger ones I feel they should be able to make them without bases. Just my preference.
It would have been better if the figures had been removable from the bases, I think.

I'm wondering, is that such a big deal? Aren't these ending up on shelves anyway? Bases limit playability, but I think the overwhelming majority of the people on this forum don't actually play with their figures, or do they?  ^-^
For me, it limits the useability of the model in a diorama setting.

We knew about that ages ago. Go back and read the thread and you'll see.

If it's due to the base not working with the substrate you have just lightly bury the base under the substrate. works great with dios.

Pawnosuchus

On the base issue, sure you can cover them up with dirt or whatever for a diorama, or you can cut the base off, but why should I have to? My issue is that if you are in the business of manufacturing dinosaur figures you should be able to design one to stand without the base. If you can't, hire a better designer or get in another business. If you like the bases fine, but I for one do not and will not buy a figure that I have to re-design.

Chad

I don't mind the bases. I think they allow for more dynamic poses and solve some of the anatomical problems designers have to deal with trying to make a figure stand on its own. To each, their own, of course which is why Collecta and Safari etc will never please everyone. I'm pretty happy with the Collecta 2014 line so far, but here's hoping they go off the rails a bit and release an archosaur or one of the neglected pterosaurs. An estemennosuchus would be fantastic as would a nyctosaurus with the "skin sail" on its head gear.

I agree.
In fact, the living animal had similar proportions, but was much heavier, had smaller feet and still it stood up without aid.
So, maybe paleontologists and manufacturers are wrong about the gravity center position of the animals. Or maybe their tails were much heavier than we suspect. May be the manufacturers need to make air chambers in the upper part of the bodies.

I was considering to buy the Icthyovenator... until I saw the base. No, no. If we chop out the base, the figure is not going to stand on its own.

I liked what Favorite did with their newest models. The bipeds had bases, but you could remove them if needed, and they'd still stand on their own (I think...I don't own any of the Favorites apart from the brown T.rex). Everyone wins :)

My Allosaurus, Spinosaurus, and Velociraptor didn't stand when removed from the bases..the Allo and Spino even sort of lean with them.

That said removable bases is the best of both worlds. Everyone is happy with them right ? If you want a permanent base you glue it down,  if not it can be removed.

A living animal can shift it's weight to stay upright, when creating a model or toy that's just not feasible. Also look at the materials used. If you blew up a figure to 1:1 proportions it will have problems standing as well.

CityRaptor

Indeed. There is a difference between a lving, moving animal and a static model. Think of a Bicycle: As long as it moves, it does not fall under normal circumstances, but if it stops, it falls.
Jurassic Park is frightning in the dark
All the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things'll harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend
Oh no

Not just that but the material they're made out of....a lot different!

CityRaptor

That aswell. Nature is not so easy imitated. Hence models have to made with bases, enlarged feet or tripod stance.

Yup, I mentioned that all the way back on page 23 I think. This is why I prefer it when moderators for the admin start these new release threads.  ;)
