Basilosaurus isis

First work-in-progress of a Basilosaurus muscle diagram.

Basilosaurus isis

The image says it all. I still don't know why I did it but... I wanted to see if I could look at muscles of a contemporary whale (Grey whale) and translate that to the 'King Lizard' somehow. I added the flukes (kinda like a Pilot whale or a Beluga) and hind-limb fins. Neck is almost totally Beluga but the head had a little influence from the Spinner Dolphin. I had to elongnate the tail more as it was far too short. Maybe it could be a little fatter but, I like it.

I think I can do this. I think I can. It's actually really fun to do the research and then apply it to a beast.

And again, I know I have so much to learn but at the same time, the learning itself is fun. I'm surprised at myself. That I could do this ,most likely inaccurate in places, diagram in about 3 hours shows me that I really can do this.

Thank you Zoptyrex! I'm honestly surprised that I did this. I'd like to try a few of these with various crocodyliforms and early-birds. I really love learning the information behind the diagrams and applying it. ;)

Oh gosh, thank you Niroot! I really love the whole process of this from research to drawing. Nooo, don't say that, I am not brilliant. XD

Say folks I will take suggestions of other creatures to draw.

Unenlagia comahuensis

I am thoroughly enjoying myself now that the stress of things is finally winding down. Here, have a U. comhuensis. I re-looked at those dang legs and feet and I am so far off on those it's not even funny. I'd fix it but... ah well. As for the colors, I went with a Pied Herons' colors. Oh and that poor fish may be a species of Dastilbe. It didn't stand a chance with this fellow on the prowl.

Very cool under-represented dromaeosaur, Unenlagia.  You did it justice.   8)

Weaver

Aaah! Oh gosh, this is no-where near as amazing as your own Unenlagia paintings. You are too kind Gryhoceratops. Far too kind. :'D

Himmapaan

It is lovely. I really like its posture, too.  ^-^

I wonder if perhaps you might consider altering one of its feet to be planted more firmly on the ground? Perhaps the right one (its right, not the viewer's), since it seems to be leaning on that side?

Weaver

I've been watching far too many nature-documentaries. Herons downing fish is something I cannot get out of my mind at the moment. XD I think I can go back in and re-do that darn foot. You're absolutely right Niroot, it does seem to be leaning very weirdly. Thank you!

Blade-of-the-Moon

Sweet piece. It is a species you don't here much about...and the color as well as feeding habit isn't something one thinks of for this species. ( for example if it's eating fish it's pterosaur or a spinosaur ) Nice work all around ! ;D

Very nice work!  The color scheme really looks nice on that animal! :D

Kind of an update but not really: I've been gone simply because of college issues. :<

Weaver

Alrighty, here's a big update with a little art and a lot of words. I am at college now! Hooray! As my art-classes progress I have taken it upon myself to add dinos, prehistoric reptiles, and ancient mammals/birds to my classwork. Subtly too. Except not today. I'm doing a photo-reference of the Triceratops horridus at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History for our gray-scale study in gouche. It's fun. <3

Oh! And I do have a few new things to share as well.
-Back in oh gosh, when was it? I was chatting about the neural spines on Amargasaurus cazaui and I tried to imagine both the rattling idea and the skin-sail idea. With the sail idea I kept thinking about the why and wouldn't the skin have to be fairly loose (for some reason) and hence, we get the awesome, 'Warning' Amagasaurus. By bending the neck almost to the ground the skin-folds could like, flare out with the spines holding them in place. I figure it could be a mating or warning display. Oh and for the rattlin' Amargasaurus: I just wonder what that would be like. They have to shake their necks and bodies to get that sound going.

-Oh, and got-dang-it: I drew a Pakicetus calcis (I think that is the more complete one) as an idea for a bigger drawing. Feet are wrong but I kinda like the little guy keeping his head up in the water and being adorable. I know they're not supposed to be cute but this fellow ended up being cute. Oh well.

All of these were x-posted to my tumblr.

Blade-of-the-Moon

Nice concept on the Amargasaurus ! Would love to see that animated !

Gryphoceratops

The mouths on those amargas remind me of horses!

Weaver

@Blade: Oh my gosh. Someone do this. I don't think I know how to animate that at all. If anyone animates it for me (either idea) I will treasure it.

@Gryphoceratops: I wish I knew how to draw sauropod heads head-on. I used a skull-shot but it's hard. Maybe he's flehming? XD

Hey folks! I just realized that I had forgotten to post up my first project in 2D Design. So here it is. In gouche. Gouche is my new best friend. I love gouche. Gouche and I are going to run away together to make lots of pretty paintings. Can all of you tell how much I like this new medium? ;)

First-image shows the reference I used (a color pic I had to turn into grayscale and I believe it's from Columbus, Ohio).

This first project was to make us start thinking about values before we even got into color. I like it. It makes me happy.

Also I know what I'm going to do with my final-project for 2D Design: An artist-book (must be a set of 3 identical copies) and it's going to be neat. <3 I'll be sure to post progress on that for you all.

Weaver

I made a Human-sized V. mongoliensis skull for my costume.
