Albertosaurus sarcophagus - new sculpture in progress

Hello folks,

I took some advice and did some tinkering, so I started disassembling the armature for my 1:20 (if I remember correctly) Albertosaurus sculpture and started working on the torso. This one will quite obviously be turned into a resin kit (might take a while, though) and I am really curious to see, how it'll turn out. So far I am rather pleased with the finished half of the chest, I will bake that tomorrow morning and then work on the other side to match halves. Sculpting scales without stamps is a torture, I can tell you that.

(iPhone pictures for lack of proper lighting and better camera)

I will post pictures of updates in this thread, I hope you'll like it!

Greetings,
Fabrizio

Looks good so far bud !  I can certainly agree about doing scales individually..same goes for feathers for that matter..  ;)

Lookin' awesome  :)  What do you use to individually sculpt your scales, pardon if that sounds stupid. Very curious to know.

Thanks guys!

Oh yeah, I can imagine! Might be one of the reasons why I haven't tried feathers so far. :D

There's no stupid questions, only stupid answers. ;) This time I used my beloved folding tool and some modified dentist's tool (which basically looks like a really tiny loop). With that, I carefully carved each scale separately.

The first part has been baked this morning, currently it is cooling down in the oven. I am very excited about this project, still so much I have to learn about making model kits! Living in Austria makes it kind of hard to find any useful information/courses, haha.

The first pre-bake turned out nicely, now I went to the second half of the chest and started sculpting on it. I actually wanted to get it done today, but it turns out I should have started much earlier (getting far too tired). Oh well.
In the meantime: have some work-in-progress pictures:

Thank you, I see how you doing it now from your last picture, such work. But, the scales do look really, really nice.

Whoops! Quoted myself. Still getting the hang of this darn new-fangled internet thingy.  ???

Haha, happened to me before as well! Thanks for the compliment! :) I managed to finish the wrinkles on the chest yesterday. Since it's raining here, I will most likely do the scales today.

fabricious

Yet another update! The second part of the chest has been finished and baked, sadly one of my family members took it out of the oven and a really tiny crack occurred (probably from cooling down too quickly). Right now I am working on the first half of the tail. The pubis needs a lot of work still, so please ignore that mistake. I am still very excited about this project, hopefully everything works out properly!

Yet some more pictures. Just some more scales to do on the dorsal side, then it's off to the oven again! As you may be able to tell: I like wrinkles. I also corrected the pubis area as far as I could with that armature underneath. I might have to make a new armature for the head, since the nose on the current one is far too bulky for Albertosaurus.

Very cool! I can't wait to see this project finished!

Also, here's an Albertosaurus skull if you need a good reference:

What a great reference, thanks a lot! I'll definitely be using it. Now then, into the oven with the piece, I'll keep you updated! :)

That's looking fantastic!  I look forward to updates.

Your welcome!

Paleogene Pals

Looking great so far! How much do you plan to sell this kit for?

fabricious

Not sure yet, first I want to get it done decently, before I think of pricing. I got a commission for a different sculpture that should be done in between, so this one might take a while.

Here we are, another update. Thanks to Yutyrannus I changed the armature of the skull. It is now in the oven, baking the inner parts, upper inside of the jaw and the parts holding the eyes in place. I actually thought I'd do the legs first (or finishing the torso, for that matter), but I am now really eager to do the face first. Might not get a lot done today (due to an illustration that needs finishing), but soon~

The foil is just there to hold the head in place, it will be positioned a bit lower, so the neck can arch properly:

Here you have the goofiest facial expression ever:

The upper jaw received some teeth. Adding these was a torture, but worth it, I think.

I made it, so I could add the lips on top of the teeth without pushing too much stuff around afterwards. They are baked already, the only part for today that's cooling down currently is the right foot (which was a torture to sculpt). More pictures soon!

Thanks! As you can see, I can't keep my hands off the model... :D

Enough for now!
