Mmmmm... i'd be really interested!

Where are you from? Maybe we can come up with something!

Perhaps you could sell the armatures with eyes as kits?

That's actually not that bad an idea! Just the armature with a couple of layers of paper mache for people to finish... I'll consider it!

Blade-of-the-Moon

Real feathers carry a lot of headaches in my opinion. I used to have several Native American art pieces, if the feathers aren't treated often or kept in sealed boxes moth larvae will devour them. So much better to make faux ones.

fabricious

Well, since I intend to make/sell these basically as museum-related sculptures, I'd rather use real materials that I can get easily than make fake ones that don't look real. We have a couple of real-feather-pieces around the house and there haven't been any issues in over a decade, I don't think it would be much different with one of these.

The next sculpture will be one with scales, though, simply because I want to try my hands at that. ;)

Current status:
Apart from the right arm and both hands the armature is finished! Now I'm off for today, but I like how far I've come with this in just two days.

Looking awesome as Always, if you can make other prehistoric animals like this id certainly buy something made by you. If it isnt to expensive :P

I'll most likely make a couple more (after I've completed this one, at least), maybe an Aquilops americanus, since I kind of like the genus and it's not too big. Regarding the price, that largely depends on how well I can work with the paper mache layers and how detailed I can get the skin done. The Velociraptor might become a little more expensive than others due to the work with real feathers (and the cleaning, drying and adjusting involved). As for the Aquilops... maybe around 100-200€? Don't quote me on that yet, just an idea. ;)

jooooo

I love Aquilops. Although i probably cant afford to buy something from you. shipping will add alot of costs.

Beautiful and dynamic (even though it's a simple pose) :)

The armature is finished! Now for a break, afterwards I'll start mixing the first layer of paper maché. Woohoo!

PS.: I love taxidermist's eyes.

Looking great! I wish I had your skill. :)

Thank you! It's really just a matter of conviction (and being a little crazy).

Tyto_Theropod

I'm pretty sure I have both those traits, but I'm still nothing like that good haha!

You never know until you try. ;)

Anyway, it's slowly turning into a newspaperosaurus.

You inspired me, i started a 1:1 scale small Dimorphodon, its wingspan as of now is 80cm with 60cm length.

Awesome! I can't wait to see pictures of that!

Pachyrhinosaurus

Looking good! I know you're covering this in feathers, but do you suggest papier mache to be a good material for the outermost layer? I have long been considering making one but thought it would be a little weak even for indoor use, never tried it so I don't know.

Depends of the mixture you use for your mache. Paper mache is surprisingly strong once it dries. I know that flour and water paste tends to be susceptible to mold, but you can use wallpaper paste which has anti fungicide mixed into it. I know that it is popular to mix joint compound into the glue and paper mix which strengthens it enormously.

I don't know if you'd be interested but I have always been inspired by this site for paper mache animal projects: http://www.ultimatepapermache.com/

Dinomike

This is going to be great! It's looking really good! I didn't know paper mache can be that versatile material. Tyrantqueen, I checked out your link. Impressive stuff!  Now I' m really tempted to start sculpting 1:1! :)

Thank you TQ for answering that question! That site was one of the reasons that got me to continue this project. :)

I intend to avoid flour for the mould reason, for the first layer I just used water, wallpaper adhesive and strips of newspaper, for the finished layers I'll most likely add joint compound and turn it into a modeling paste (so it can be properly sculpted and sanded, if needed).
