Transformers Collectors call companies who make original, unlicensed figures '3rd Party' while those who knock-off already excisting products are '4th Party'. I guess Papo and Nanmu could be called '3rd Party Company' when it comes to JP figures?

I guess that makes sense, given that bootleg and knockoff seem to be used interchangeably. Makes discussion a little more specific.

I've never really distinguished between knock-offs and bootlegs myself, so this was interesting to read. I dislike both for different reasons.

Finally got that mysterious Papo bootleg by Cikoo.

The jaw and both arms are articulated.

Thanks for the pictures.
When I compare them to my original Papo Spinosaurus figure, only the body, lower jaw and forearms are "stolen" from the original Papo Spino. The sail is from the PNSO Spino. The upper part of the head (not the jaw) also seems to be different from the original Papo Spino. Especially the upper front curve of the snout, the teeth and tissue around the eyes. Maybe they resculpted them though?
One of the bottem part of the hind legs is definately not Papo either.
The tail? No idea what happened there.

S @Stolpergeist . If you ever want to customize that fellow, I suggest you go for the smooth skinned spinosaurus lots have been asking. Dont get me wrong, I love me a draconic spine beast, but a smooth one cant hurt
Its  so skinny its almost like an amrature

Makes me wonder how long it'll be till one of these companies sticks the Papo Giganotosaurus head on the running Tyrannosaurus, or something.

Stegotyranno420

S @Stolpergeist btw i got a tip

Want to repose or customize something but don't wanna ruin de original.
Try molding and casting
I say it might be better if u pasted the papo head onto the eofauna version, but the papo rex might work aswell

Funny how REBOR was talking about how Nanmu doesn't have any knockoffs  ::)

I have found some cheap dinos on Ebay with actually good looking FEATHERED T. Rex among them. Anyone knows what is it Knock-off of? I am thinking about getting it for a repaint.

Hi, does anybody recognise what the dilophosaurus in this lot from La-na Time is based on?

I assume it is a bootleg or vague copy of something as a few of those models come from Favorite co. sculpts.

Thanks!

These are indeed 100% original figures made in China, I've contacted that seller about them before. These sculpts are produced in three different formats, large soft figures, articulated ones, and solid mini figures (a few inches long). Sadly many of them had standing issues when scaled up and the factory apparently destroyed them.

Rest in peace 70cm Dilos :'(

Can confirm otherwise. While the (generic) pose is similar it is a completely different sculpt.

These dinosaurs are from a line that showed up a few years ago by an unspecified manufacturer. All completely new sculpts and all available in a few different formats (small, articulated, mid sized vinyl and very large vinyl). Sadly the vinyl versions of the Dilophosaurus and Pachycephalosaur were apparently scrapped because they wouldn't stand.

As for Favorite, I guess you mean the Parasaurolophus? It to is definitely a different sculpt, this is a scaled version of the vinyl one seen here:

I have to admit, those figures look pretty nice overall, even if it's clear where some of them are getting their inspiration from.
The Dilo is particularly tempting; I'm trying to figure out if it reminds me of another model or not.

Irritation

Has this been talked about yet? I found it on Amazon and I don't know what brand this is ripping off.

bmathison1972

Is it the Papo Pentaceratops, but leaning forward so as not in a bipedal stance?

Gwangi

That one looks like the CollectA Chasmosaurus.

I was wondering has anybody made a knockoff of the Dino hazards Irittator or Papo Tupuxuara?  :P

Fembrogon

As a matter of fact, there was some controversy here on the boards a few months back regarding the Irritator; apparently there was a small surplus of models produced at the factory Yvy had contracted, which the factory began selling through parties on AliExpress and elsewhere. While these weren't "knockoffs" in the traditional sense, the factory wasn't authorized to sell these models, so Yvy's products were being sold without their permission or profit. A few individuals here (myself included) ended up buying from that "illegitimate" stock before we were aware of the situation; I believe most or all of those listings are down now.
While I do like my Irritator very much, I'd have rather paid the price I did for the legitimately-sold product. Yvy and Dino Hazard are a very young venture, and they surely need all the legitimate support they can get.

Strepsodus

I only use Knockoffs and substitutes for rare or discontinued figures, but sometimes I feel like vomiting when I see a horrible knockoff of a Collecta or Safari figure.

Also: They're making Aliexpress Knockoffs of the Thinkart Dunkleosteus now

It's almost hilarious the lengths these people will go. It's like they can do anything BUT make their own stuff. It was ok for me to buy a couple knockoffs and save $50+ but enough is enough.

stargatedalek

See, this is one I would consider getting because the end result is such a different product. I have no use for a fragile resin statue, I collect toys and action figures, high-end or not still action figures. Resin statues are not a thing I have a spot for.

I agree with that statement. Currently the Best Dunkle out there is Favorite's to which I already placed an order via Brett. If they had copied a resin statue of a novel species, like say, Cymbospondylus, I would have definitely gotten that. I would have probably also ordered the knockoff thinkart if the pectoral fins weren't so much like that of Sarcopterygians.

As for myself, i'm completely in favor of bootleg and knockoff IF the company producing the figure one's looking for went into liquidation ; and or decided to never produce said model ever again. Now, this only applies if the figure can't be found on the primary market, obviously. However, it's true enough knockoff are a rather budget-friendly way to buy a figure ; and if inferior quality is good enough for someone, why should them be forced to spend more on "quality" them can't necessarily afford, nor maybe, even care for ? On another hand, if one's fine with paying the price of an original figure they're looking out for, then it's better to buy it ; to support the company as well as their artist ; and ensure we all get more figures coming our way.

I completely agree with what Chubi said here, and it makes perfect sense from my point of view.

GiganotosaurusFan

I saw a ripoff of a Carnegie Miragaia. It looked horrible, but you could see the resemblance. It has a poop paint job as well...figuratively and literally.
Any Giganotosauruses are friends. Any other carnivores are...I think I'll run now.
