With prices for figures going up retailers like to have some "relatively" inexpensive impulse buys for customers. K&M and Mojo address that.

They are impulse buys because they are cheap, but what makes the figures cheaper? Lower quality materials, poor paint jobs, and obvious seams - of course - there are savings to be had there.  But what about the sculpts, which I presume are created from scratch, why do bargain bin figures have to have the wrong number of toes and impossible poses?

These 2015 sculpts are not monsters, which shows that they are doing some research, at least. So, what corners are being cut to make savings during this creative process? Are the sculptors significantly cheaper and less able? Are they working more quickly to save cash? Are they not allowed to use Google? :P

Even so, surely they are given some direction. It is not that these are "bad" sculpts, they are nicely detailed and time has obviously been spent creating them. It is that they are inaccurate. This has an easy and essentially costless fix.

I get that they might not create accurate figures because they are lazy or don't care, but does it really save money? Maybe, I don't know.

Patrx

Reminds me of the skin on the most recent Favorite Desktop Allosaurus. "Stabbed repeatedly with the end of a coffee stirrer", as Dan put it.

For some reason it reminds me of:

CityRaptor

Excellent!
Now it just needs a Dinosaur Smithers...

Jurassic Park is frightning in the dark
All the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things'll harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend
Oh no

Roselaar

Just encountered my first Mojosaurs at a Collector's Fair, including the new T-Rex. I didn't like them much, so I left them in peace. Too bad they didn't have the mammals...

Perhaps you should have left them in pieces....hah >:D

*gets booed*

DinoLord

I stopped by a Hobby Lobby today for the first time cause I heard that the chain has Safari dinosaurs. All I left with was disappointment at seeing they only had mojosaurs...  :'(

CityRaptor

That would never happen in Germany because it is Schleich County!

Leaving them in peices would mean that he would have to pay for them. That would be a waste of money AND a support of those figures. Never buy figures to destroy them.

Uhhh...that was...y'know, a joke.

When the heck are we going to see the Basilosaurus???

These Mojo dinosaur figures hold absolutely no appeal for me. They are such funnily outdated, inaccurate sculpts, but it seems like someone said this is actually intentional on the company's part, to appeal to kids or something. Mojo must not want to cater to kids who like dinosaurs, because I would have avoided these figures as a six year old, too. They are that bad.

I can't make sense of Mojo. Their four prehistoric mammals are GREAT, and I own a couple. I expect the Basilosaurus will be good too, but their dinosaurs seem to be sculpted by an entirely different person, who is unfortunately just...not good. Or knowledgeable on dino anatomy.

To be fair, there are 7 Mojo mammals, including the mammoth & calf, and the Smilodon. Which are still decent figures.

Ok. Now I see that Mojo doesn't care about new scientific discoveries. And tyrantqueen, your`re right. The skin is very, very weird.
Dude, I very like Dinos and I cannot understand those who don't.

Nice attempt mojo  :) good luck for your next step

The real cost is the development time and the impact on time to market.  There are good reasons why Safari ltd and CollectA take 2 or more years to produce a new product line. My guess is we have something similar at Papo and Schliech.  With current technology you can knock out a single mold cheaply.  You still have to set up a production process, sales network do some market research etc.  Pick some pictures from public source art work or copy something from the internet.  Hire artists to sculpt from it who may not have any experience with animals let alone dinosaur reconstructions.  The chances that the art choices are recent, correct and that they have the detailing visible to be copied or that the the artist understands the details is low.  Urban legend says you can go to Hong Kong with a figure 3D scan and generate a mold in a week.  Find a factory that is a specialists in producing figures and be shipping in less than 6 months if you are not picky about the details or the quality control.  All this saves money and time and it is why people copy known products.  Mojo does original work which I like it is not intended to be Museum work and as a marketing point you might actually sell more of older reconstructions since they dominate kids books.  Keep in mind your money is all tied up during this time not earning anything until you ship.
You can never have too many dinosaurs

I believe  that  this model was in the works long before the new revaluation about this creture

Daspletodave

The Mojo Spinosaurus is pretty decent - I can see it appealing to a lot of little kids, but it's not for me.

Takama

I think its one of there better dinos.    Unlike the new Tyrannosaurus, this one appears that it is a Horizontal animal, but its just resting on its tail for the moment.  Honestly these are there best dinosaurs to date. only the T-Rex in my eyes, fails

Manatee

To me, their Stego is acceptable, and the Spino can slide through for a model of a retro spinosaur. The others are complete and utter crap in my opinion, but I've stated that on this thread far too many times already.
