a little sculpture i've been working on along with the ( arco in name only) it's a 1: 20 scale deinonychus. imo, i could of done much better with this. this really was something made without the proper means of building. the entire armature was made out of cardboard, i though the model was small enough to handle it, but the clay ended up moistening it. i also haven't made a stand for it, which made me touch and smear the details way to often.

i'm actually planning on doing another one right after this one just to see how the model turned out when done the right way.

but for the good aspects of it, it served good practice in sculpting feathery textures, (which really was the whole reason i decided to do a deinonychus) and i have found the use for cardboard as a form of armature to be pretty good in areas such as the body and neck. even the legs would of been good if i only had some wire to help reinforce it. i did find he tail and head troublesome, but i feel that more practice will allow me to get use to things.

heres some pictures. might i note, that it did fell down while in the oven, causing the tail to break. i'm gonna have to glue it back on the body and use epoxy to seal the cracks. all in all, i can't wait to start on my second version.

It looks very nice. I used cardboard in the past for armatures and it did not do as well as yours, it seems, in terms of support. I really like the way the texture of the feathers on the wings was done.

i have now started another deinonychus. thus far, i am much more pleased with the look of this one thus far. it is the same scale as the first deinonychus and as of now, the head is completely finished and baked. i'm finding these smaller sculptures to e so much fun to make.

spinosaurus1

changed the title so it would be more appropriate to the things i'm going to display.

as of now, i'm just trying to get rid of this sculpey clay by making some small figures in 1:20 scale.

heres Ophiacodon

and a  diplocaulus

Those are in 1:20? The Diplocaulus must be TINY! These look really good.

Great, I like how dynamic your armatures are.

Pachyrhinosaurus

Those look promising. One thing I noticed is that you do not have your armatures attached to anything at the feet. It will be interesting to see them progress in this way, because I am currently looking into transitioning from wood bases. What kind of wire are you using? I use hanger wire and it can be tricky to use at times.

rather poorly, but yes, i have him.  Also the Sideshow Dilo pair which is far better.

I also remember seeing a few photos of a light green, sitting dilophosaurus, does anyone know who made it?  ;D

thanks for the comments guys.

i unfortunately cant recall the type of wire that i use. i had it for a while but i know that it' thin, very malleable, fairly inexpensive and bought from walmart. i feel that my larger sculpts that i have planned would be better off with hanger wire.

i really been wanting to start building sculpts with bases for quite a while, but a lack of resources have cause me to take some risks and try builds without one. i bake my sculptures multiple times, so the very first thing i knock out are the lags and feet. their imo the hardest part to build up and it would be great to have them out of the way so i can do body work.

here are some more armature works i did. 1:20 scale heads of allosaurus, torvosaurus, and crylophosaurus

Blade-of-the-Moon

cool, never thought to make skulls like that.
