Viergacht and the magical world of customization

I used to repaint all my dinosaur toys when I was a kiddie, but I haven't done for quite a while, so this is new territory for me! I got a bunch of dinos for Xmas, but the person getting them for me didn't realize they were knockoffs (which normally I wouldn't buy) so I figured they'd make perfect victims for me to practice on.

First up, what seems to be one of the recent Schleich Tyrannosaurs. Unlike the original, this one doesn't have a moveable jaw. The paint job is close to the original, a rather overly bright all-over lime green.

I gave it a medium gray base coat, and then started adding patterns and such. The black-appearing areas are actually a mixture of burnt umber and phthalo blue, the yellower parts are ochre mixed with lemon yellow (more yellow on the snout, less on the underbelly, and it shades to a grey (phthalo blue, burnt umber and white) on the legs. Later on I'll add a wash of pure phthalo blue around the eyes, and drybrush on some lighter colors.

Here is the painting part pretty much finished. I was going for a dark pattern to hide it in wooded areas, with stripes to break p the outline of the tail and head. The head and next are a little more colorful, with a wash of brilliant red under the throat, as a display. I still need to add a gloss coat to the eyes and mouth. Ignore the upper back and thighs, those will get covered in the next step: feathers!

And a bonus, Bartleby and Minnie "helping" me take photos.

Wow! :o I love it! I have the real Schleich Tyrannosaurus, it is a weird model (except for the head which is kinda cool) with a weird color. I think you improved it a lot! Normally I like seeing birdlike dinosaurs, but your repaint makes the rex look very reptilian, and I actually kinda like that as well!

Thanks! It is a bizarrely proportioned critter, which is partly why I decided to start on it - figured I couldn't mess it up too bad! I hope the feathers end up covering some of the weirdness. It does have a lot of nice bumpy detail.

[Off Nick and Eddie's reactions to the dinosaurs] Oh yeah "Ooh, aah", that's how it always starts. But then there's running and screaming.

{about the T-Rex) When he sees us with his kid isn't he gonna be like "you"!?

Very cool custom! Obviously the sculpt isn't the most accurate Rex by a long run, but your paint job really improves the model as a whole. I'm looking forward to seeing your feathers, too. I have recently completed a similar project on a Carnegie Tyrannosaurus using milliput from the local DIY shop, and I can definitely recommend it as a sculpting medium for custom toys.

It's very advanced work, but it might give you some ideas. ;) Anyway, this is an amazing paint job, especially for a first try. Keep up the good work!

Huge improvement! I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work! That Schleich Rex is unbearable by itself, so it's been really neat seeing people customize it. It would be cool to see different peoples versions of it next to each other.

Hahaha don't overdo it! You've no idea how many models I've ruined because I've overestimated what I can do! I'm not saying you couldn't do any better than me, but stuff like reposing might be biting off more than you can chew if you've only just started out.

Well, I've kitbashed a few figures and I used to paint D&D miniatures, so I'm not a TOTAL noob - pretty close, though! And I have all these fakies to practice on :D

Nanuqsaurus

Can't wait to see what it looks like with feathers! I love feathered rexies! Good luck! :D

Nanuqsaurus

Oh wait... you meant real feathers! :o Haha, thought you'd just sculpt new feathers. :P Looks really awesome anyway, hard to imagine this was once just a cheap knock-off.

Viergacht

Yeah, and the fluff is getting everywhere! I'm eager to try this out on a decent looking figure.

Welp, I tried to repaint the murderbird a bit and the new coat of varnish turned a weird white color . . . I think I've ruined it. :P Bummer.

Viergacht

I think I might be able to fix sexy rexy's eff'd up varnish. I still have no idea what made it go opaque but I'm pretty damn irritated. What a waste!

Here's rexy and his screaming younger sibling.

Some of the derposaurs I got for Xmas. The little ones were originally clear plastic. I painted them but the crap varnish ruined them. My goal was to have mini dinosaurs in my succulent pots, but I'll somer strip the paint and redo them. Shame, since the paint jobs turned out fairly nice.

Base coat of burnt umber & white on the Stego. It looks like a CollectA knockoff, but with the Wild Safari paint job. I haven't quite decided on pattern yet, but I wanted to get it done today in case I have an inspiration for this weekend.

The little rex chopped into pieces. Plans are to close the mouth and turn the head to one side, shorten the arms, add a coat of feathers, and give it new more petitie feets and a base. I also managed to cut myself twice because I'm basically 4 years old and should only use blades with adult supervision.
