Desmostylus.

Hey suspsy is that your wife in the background? I ask because the lady has that "aren't you done yet?" look that I know so well.

suspsy

No, my wife was not with me on that occasion. She did, however, accompany me to the CMN open house yesterday and gave me the look at least twice. But she understood how excited I was to be there.

I guess the other lady was just checking you or the Teleoceras out.  :D

The ROM's next big project is the Dawn of Life gallery, which will showcase the evolution of life from the Cambrian to the Triassic. No idea when it will be completed, but you can learn more here:

http://www.rom.on.ca/en/support-us/sponsorship-opportunities/the-future-gallery-of-early-life

In the mean time, there's a small but impressive display of fossils. Here's Dunkleoteus:

Yes, it really is an adorable model. I'll certainly be returning to the ROM once the new gallery is open. Hopefully it'll include more fish models.

Just a few more photos to go. Here is a diorama of a recently extinct dinosaur, the passenger pigeon.

IMG_2034 by Suspsy Three, on Flickr

IMG_2035 by Suspsy Three, on Flickr

More recently extinct dinosaurs and a mammal. We're living in the midst of the next great extinction. :(

IMG_2037 by Suspsy Three, on Flickr

And here's something saddening on a different level. The ROM gift shop is selling knockoffs of Papo and Schleich instead of the real thing. That's just plain pathetic. What the spotted heck happened to the days when museum gift shops rocked?!

IMG_2068 by Suspsy Three, on Flickr

And that's the ROM, folks. Like I said, I'll be sure to return there once the Dawn of Life gallery is completed, whenever that is!

I don't feel Papo dinosaurs let alone Schleich belong in museums anyway, I'd rather have that than nothing but Schleich like the HNHM, plus there's something just a little satisfying about Schleich bootlegging. The last time I was there was a long time ago and they barely had anything as far as toys, just a few overpriced Wild Republic plush snakes and some expensive artsy toys for infants, so as hard as it must be to imagine that's a step up.
