In response to the "Give the unnamed, a name" thread, this is a sister thread in which you throw out all the scientific names you've come up with for a hypothetical animal from the past, or just something you thought up.

You don't have to post your own if your a practicing scientist that wishes to keep their ideas to their own publications :P lol

Here's some of mine

Acanthalophosaurus- Thorn Crested Lizard (Horned Ceratosaurid)
Bagonyx- Small Claw (Spinosaur Ancestor/Dwarf Megaraptorid)
Biceratops- Two horned face (Ceratopsian)
Botanosaurus-  Plant Lizard (squamate, or Sauropod)
Boviceratops- Cow horned face (Ceratopsian)
Brontacanthosaurus- Thunder spine lizard (Spinosaur, acrocanthosaur)

Sounds fun!

Ardeaspinax magnificens - Magnificent Heron Spine (an elaborately sailed spinosaur)
Creuidactylus imperator - Emperor Maelstrom Hand (large seagoing pterosaur)
Ultimessor hellensis - Hell's Last Reaper (Hell Creek therizinosaur)
Gigachampsus thalasseus - Ocean-dwelling Giant Champsosaur
Dicoronatops scurrus - Jester Two-frilled Face (ceratopsid with a large cleft at the top of its frill)
Chorusaurus incessus - Marching Band Lizard (lambeosaurine hadrosaur)

Boviceratops mixes Latin and Greek. I'm not 100% sure, but I think Bouceratops might pass muster with a Classicist.

Spelling should be Latinized to Buceratops (cf. Bucephalus, from Greek Boukephalos, "ox head" - the name of Alexander the Great's horse). Biceratops is also a barbarism (Latin + Greek); should be Diceratops, which is occupado. Not that there aren't barbarisms in dinosaur names already - Scutellosaurus springs to mind.

Fun idea for a thread. I haven't thought about this before, but I'll give it a go.

Eurytyphon (broad + Typhon, a mythological giant responsible for earthquakes) - wide gauge titanosaur
Verbericauda (whip tail) - diplodocid
Sauroter (literally "lizard killer", the name for the spike on the butt of a hoplite's spear) - small theropod
Gracilinecator (slim killer) - small theropod
Musadens (banana tooth) - big tyrannosaur

My Latin and Greek knowledge is rusty, but let me try:

Deinobasilus jurassicus - ("Terrible king of the Jurassic") Very large allosauroid.

Gigantotherium notos - ("Giant beast of the south") Indricothere from Southern Asia.

Homo Dimorphensis - ("Two-formed man") Extinct hominins noted for having extreme sexual dimorphism where female specimens are substantially robust and tall while males are small and lithe. Common name: Amazonians.

Microgorgonops tenax - ("Tenacious tiny gorgon face/eye") Small species of gorgonopsid that had survived into the early Triassic.

Some of those from an alternate timeline:

Dinosaurs:

Magnifiraptor sagax ( Wise magnificent thief ) - highly intelligent Dromaeosauroids, evolved from Velociraptor, named itself that way

Gigatyrannus imperiosis ( Imperial giant tyrant ) - giant Tyrannosaur

Gigatyrannus domesticus ( domesticated giant tyrant ) - a "domesticated" subspecies of Gigatyrannus, used to guard herds.

Phytotyrannus  inopinatum ( unexpected  leaf tyrant ) - herbivorous Tyrannosauroid

Gladiceratops maximus ( maximal sword horn)  - giant Ceratopsian

Armatusaurus grandus ( grand weapon lizard ) - heavily armored Ankylosaur

Anguirussaurus honda ( Honda's Anguirus lizard ) - japanese Ankylosaurid

Stegotitan miraculum  ( miracolous roof titan ) - late surviving Stegosaur

Thalattodracon hippocampus ( hippocampus sea dragon ) - marine, semi-aquatic hadrosaur

Pterosaurs:
Zhejiangopterus gyaos  - small species of Zhejiangopterus, whose fossils were seemingly found in combat with Sinemys gamera.

Radodactylus tsuburaya ( Tsuburaya's Radon finger ) - two-crested Pteranodontid found in a radium mine

Synapsids:

Ursagorgon major ( big bear Gorgon ) - large Gorgonopsian of bear-like build

Ursagorgon minor ( little bear Gorgon ) - small Gorgonopsian of bear-like build

Homo simpsonis ( Simpson Man ) - heavily build hominins with bald heads and yellowish skin

Elasmotherium alicornis - gracile build species of Elasmotherium

All the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things'll harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend
Oh no

Thanks for the emendation!
