JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION

Quote from: ITdactyl on June 15, 2021, 02:25:23 AMOuch, bad eh? Some of my favorite dinosaur moments were from JP:TLW but yeah, as a movie I can't say it was stellar.

Back on topic, apparently Dominion will continue the tradition from BaBR of having some "found footage". I'm happy we'll be seeing BaBR Allosaurus and Mosasaurus again, but a bit sad they're relegated to cameos.  I was really hoping they'd show the world reacting to those 2 big predators - now I'm just hoping they won't suffer the same fate as the "Pirates of the Caribbean" Kraken (Calamari'd off-screen).

I haven't been following the Dominion twitter feed (I only browse Twitter if a member here shares a link) - is it true they tweeted the design of the new raptors, then immediately deleted it afterwards?  That's weird. Either someone really made a mistake, or someone's fishing for feedback.

1) In terms of personal preference, I like JP2 better than JW (better-looking special effects & cinematography, animals that act more like animals, etc), but in terms of overall quality, I'm honestly not sure.

2) In reference to the Kraken getting "Calamari'd off-screen", was that explicitly stated in the movies? If not, where'd you find out? It's been so long since I've seen them that I don't remember.

3) Interesting.

Being the HUGE POTC fan that I am...  Beckett told Davy Jones  he should learn his place, he should have learned it when he "forced him to kill his pet " .    When Jack and co discover it washed up on a beach there is nice moment between and Barbossa remarking how the world isn't any smaller, there is just less in it. Very nice.

Brocc21

Not really on topic, but I always felt the JW films were very dull cinematography wise. I would hope Dominion has some more interesting shots, and please for the love of God drop that thin resolution!

I strongly agree with the points raised in that vid. The original JP was a master class of scale framing. There were some scenes that tried to replicate this in the succeeding films, but I don't think those attempts came close to what was achieved in JP1.

===========
H @HD-man , Blade explained it more eloquently than I could have. ;D  They did not show what happened to the Kraken (in Pirates); some characters merely explained it off as emotional plot points. I did like Barbossa's line as mentioned by Blade (man, that Geoffrey Rush can ham) but... last we saw of the Kraken it was destroying ships. Next we see it was as a beached carcass.  To go back to my point, Trevorrow confirmed both Mosa and Allo will have "found footage" cameos, and based off the interviews it's almost safe to assume they both don't figure much into Dominion's story.  So I'm really just hoping we don't get a random character just spout off that both/either were dealt with (off screen).

Faelrin

Ah that's too bad. I was at least hoping the Allosaurus from BoBR would get more screen time. Guess we'll have to take what we got there for it. At least this confirms them both for what is already a large roster.

Good to hear, would love to see a link. But yeah I guess I'll just have to deal with it, it's just I expected some kind of paleo accuracy when they vowed to go on that path this time.
I can't find where I read about a leaner design for the Giga anymore.
But will keep looking.
I read from a number of sites when the JWD info explosion happened last week.

Even if she ended up killing the Giga, people might get the wrong perception that t.rex isn't all that superior physically to Giga when in reality its much robust, bulky body and heavier weight should give it a much bigger advantage in a fight. And that flashback t.rex who lost to the Giga better be due to some handicap like a surprise ambush, it would look silly if a near deathbed Rexy won the fight while a healthy, young prime rex lost in a square fight lol.
Superior physically can mean so many things though.
I think you meant strength specifically yeah?
Eliud Kipchoge is physically superior than me, but I doubt he is stronger.
Still not outside the realm of possibility that a Giga can take down a Rex in a square fight, too many factors at play.
Ignoring that they are both together at the same time period.
And I thought folks like the underdog story, the one less likely to win always wins in movies. Just kidding.
I will still put money on a Rex. It's a safer bet.
Got your link, much obliged :). Hope this is true then. The last thing i want is some roid up Giga that resembles nothing like the scientific restoration.
Also yeah I did mean strength wise superior, in fact I don't mind Rex got beaten say in the rare occasion, anything can happen in the animal kingdom after all. But as long as Giga is depicted accurately compared to a Rex I'll be somewhat content already. But yeah the odds should definitely be in Rex's favor more often than not.

Appalachiosaurus

I've been pretty critical of what we know about JWD so far, but I do want to jump to the defense side for a moment to talk about why arguments start.

It may not seem like much, but there is a huge difference between "I didn't like the movie" and "the movie is bad." The first is an opinion, but the second is a statement and an arguable stance. Opinions are opinions, everyone's is different and it really doesn't need to be based on anything. Statements absolutely have to be based on something though, and even if it's unintentional, saying a movie is bad also kind of implies that anyone who enjoys it is enjoying a bad movie. Of course people are going to get defensive over that, nobody likes having their tastes insulted, so they'll counter back with reasons why it's actually good or how the criticisms are unmerited. Then you go back and forth, and then more people on each side join, then more people join just to tell both sides to shut up, etc.

So if you want to debate the merits of a movie as a piece of art, really get into the gritty of story structure and cinematography, then absolutely start your post with "this movie is bad." But if you're one of the people who complains when the post number spikes or if you get any pushback, then maybe stick to opinions, because "this movie is stupid" is just a short mental leap away from "you're stupid if you like this movie" and not many people are willing stand for that.

Cellphone images of the preview have started popping up and they aren't the best quality but I gotta say, based on what I can see, I'm pretty disappointed. I'll spoiler the next bit, just in case anyone is trying to avoid spoilers.

Spoiler
Like I said, the images aren't the best but it really looks like the "accurate T rex" is just the normal JP rex but with sparse feathers covering its body. I was hoping for an actual re-design, with an accurate skull and better proportions.

Feeling bummed about this if it is true.

Joking aside, I will say I am a bit disappointed by the direction of the opening. As much as I love the idea of giving us a peek into the past and showing us the journey of this dinosaur DNA into the modern age,
Spoiler
the sort of set up of the original T. rex falling and the inevitable "rematch" moment seems a bit silly to me.

I'll reiterate what someone said about Trevorrow, I think some of his ideas are hit and miss but I respect his passion for this franchise and seemingly unending drive to provide us with set pieces that speak to our inner child's love for dinosaur action. I'll also say that the original film featured Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler and co digging up a Velociraptor skeleton in Montana so it's just plain wrong to say that geographical inaccuracies only came about under Trevorrow's creative lead.

suspsy

I've been actively avoiding this thread, but heck with it, I'm just going to say what's on my mind. The previous two JW films were dreck as far as I am concerned. I was repulsed and nearly bored to sleep when I saw the first one at the theatre, and when I finally tried watching the second one on Netflix, I became so bored again that I cleaned the living room and the kitchen while it played in the background. Didn't feel like I missed anything. And I see no reason to assume that Dominion will be any different.

And I'll tell you what I do find morbidly amusing. Many JW fans try to defend the contents of the films by bringing up that throwaway line about how the creatures were genetically engineered to look the way they do, so no one should be allowed to point out inaccuracies in them. Well, now we have this new film presenting a woefully inaccurate depiction of what is supposed to be the actual Mesozoic era, with "real" dinosaurs. So that throwaway line which so many devotees have relied upon for their arguments appears to have been effectively discredited!

All that being said, I still genuinely do enjoy buying the Mattel toys for my kids, some of them at least.

Totally agree.

I'm not sure if this may have been what avatar_Carnoking @Carnoking shared (I can't see it), but I'm impressed with what I just saw from browsing on instagram. Like I freaked out in joy like I did with the Moros, assuming I'm seeing it right. Obviously spoilers:

Like is it really just me or did they give the T. rex lips? It looks like it has lips.

Pretty sure instagram will spoil me some of those screenshots, but I will still avoid looking at them here. I rather wait for the trailer. We still have a whole year until the movie releases.

Dynomikegojira

Yep Land Before Time Fairy Tale so disappointed and the franchise can crossover with the Fast & Furious now because it's now as outlandish as that.

ITdactyl

Weird... the 5 minute preview will be available to the general public in just a few more days (for a movie that won't screen until a year from now) - and people in the early press screening still couldn't help but post spoilers. ;D   >:D I wonder if it was a member of the press who took those photos, or the cinema crew.  ::)

If the intention was to keep the hype rolling after the Moros reveal though, I'll say it's working.  Whether they like the reveals or hate them, people are discussing Dominion.

I don't see why they wouldn't keep the basic design, like it or not she's a character.  It would be like hiring a different actor to play a part.

Little more put off by the dragon look of the Giga but some exec wanted it to look totally different and well...there it is.

PSA

SPOILER videos of the flashback scene (with the new critters) are now on video streaming sites, and spreading across social media.

While I like what I saw, I appreciate and understand that some people absolutely do not want their movie experience to be spoiled.

I just saw it,

Spoiler
Once again, it's great to see a drive-in scene! I like that the rex appears to be acting like a confused animal among the lights of the movie. I'm disappointed by the trailer they used on the intermission reel, though. I'm a big fan of classic drive-in intermission trailers and would have rather seen something like "Performing Food" (as seen in Grease). The trailer used in Dominion is more for indoor theatres. Still excited to see two of my favorite things combined: dinosaurs and drive-ins!
