Examination of the Devonian heterostracan Loricopteraspis reveals that they had true bone rather than just dentin or some convergently similar tissue serving as armor plating. This is a pretty big deal! Because these things were armored, protecting them from large arthropods and from other fishes, you and I can walk around supported by internal skeletons.
