It's easy to take for granted the very different morphologies of vertebrae in the thorax, abdomen, sacrum, and tail of mammals, but the evolution of those regions was a complex process beginning with amniotes whose vertebrae were mostly pretty similar. This paper looks at lots of fossil synapsids and traces the steps of that evolution.

Paper is paywalled, but I'm happy to share the pdf. http://science.sciencemag.org/content/361/6408/1249/tab-figures-data
