Acro-man's Dinosaur Wallpapers (updated 24/12/2021)

In the past 2 months I have been entertaining myself by fiddling around with my collections.

The idea is simple - make fun of them and share it.
The easiest and cheapest thing for me to do is image editing.
So I did it.... a lot....

They are called "Wallpapers" simply because they are based off existing wallpapers I found on Internet....


Hope you like them!



First off, a remastered version of my "2017 Diorama Contest Entry" - Walk the Earth 2.0
Not big improvement. Just used another mask in MIX (mobile app) and added a mountain PNG in the background.

Lone Yeti

STORY
With the world on the brink of total destruction, Yeti sets off on a journey looking for his lost brethren, driven by the simple instinct of a natural survivalist. He doesn't know his tragic fate, in which a devastating despair will eventually consume him - eternal loneliness...




* Lighting is the key. The angle where sun shines upon your model has to match that in the original wallpaper.
* Put a white paper on the ground to simulate the snow, so you will get a right reflection, a pausible shadow and save tons of time on toning.
* I really like Fireworks. You only have to move about the layers without drawing as simple as a single line, which Fireworks is fully capable of. Second reason - it's the only tool I can use....

Wrong tree

STORY
The tree starts to move as Michael climbs halfway upon it. "It's not a tree", Michael realizes, "I landed on a Huanghetitan again! I must get off now." Then he plunged onto another wrong tree - the Shantungosaurus!

* This one is easy. Mat the subjects and all.
* Too bad my old Fireworks crashes 25% chance when I use "erase" in Win10. But there's also 10% chance you open the program that won't crash at all.
* The position of the camera should be low and close enough to make the viewer "look up" at the giants and feel the depth. But.... well, I am using my Huawei Mate 10 mobile's lenses, so forget about the depth.

* Step 1: A sketch in mind
* Step 2: Search for the desired background wallpaper (keywords: cave, entrance, dark)
* Step 3: Build a lighting environment similar to that in the original wallpaper with the models in it (tunnel = cave)
* Step 4: Create a quick preview by putting everything together to check the feasibility before going for the final move (precise matting). If infeasible, change the picture.

It's better to create a tunnel with dark brown but glossy materials which will give you perfect reflection, which didn't come handy to me.


PREVIEW: infeasible picture, rocks too big, hole too small, resolution too low


Feasible background: proper lighting that you can easily simulate at home, good depth, intense mood with the camera positioning

STORY
Once DTF member @ruochuan said, "a group of herbivores together look harmoniously peaceful, while a gang of carnivores together look like a drunk mob". Thug life pops up in my mind. And here it is.

* Removal of the bases is critical, as you may not want to waste too much time matting the dark areas around their feet, which quite often can't be handled properly. Foam, toothpicks, clear rods are enough to help the models stand.
* In-depth observation / study of the original wallpaper is necessary. You gonna need it to build an in-door lighting environment that looks like the natural.
* You will also learn the tricks behind the original wallpaper from observation - it's toned to yellow-ish. You should do the same to your models. Then they can merge finely.
* I actually listened to 2Pac rap songs during the process

Mad Struggle

Freshly baked, QUEEN's epic Bohemian Rhapsody parody.
Maybe there would be a couple more music covers coming up, I don't know.
I don't often listen to music now. But I was once a cracker for QUEEN when I was younger.

@ruochuan This does look "harmoniously peaceful" this time.... right?




* 3 hours of editing. Mimimal toning used because of perfect straight-down lighting and proper shutter speed.
* Not only the backdrop, but also the ground should be black to prevent any reflection from below.

Well the fact is I am easily getting immersed into it and never realize how fast time goes.
I can sit 6 hours straight in front of the laptop then stand up tired but satisfied.

@acro-man  you are an artist out of the ordinary these wallpapers are the work of a specialist, magnificent photographs and how to recreate the wallpapers as you explain. His photographs are works of art. The figures of dinosaurs and prehistoric toy animals come to life.

Give it a try! 

Photoshop is still the best post-production tool for editing pictures.
But it's also expensive.
If you need a great free tool for editing, then I suggest GIMP.
Pro photographers use PS..
