And purchasing a whole streaming subscription, just for one program, on the hope they would be willing to produce more if it got enough views, isn't mental gymnastics? Vote with your wallet sure, but high enough up and these companies often don't even look at watch numbers for individual programs, they look at broader industry trends and sponsor a few "novel" projects on the side to add a generic label of variety to their platform.

A whole streaming subscription that costs $5 and you can cancel at any time. A whole streaming service that offers a week long free trial that will allow you to view this documentary at NO COST. And producing more content like what you're viewing is a desired outcome, yes, but seeing the program you want to see is the main motivation here, and you can do that at little or no cost. Super hero movies make money, so more are made. Jurassic Park made money, so more dinosaur movies were made. It's a cycle we've seen countless times, so no mental gymnastics required. Don't just say it because I did. So, Prehistoric Planet gets views, makes money, then MAYBE we get more. I don't know why this is even worth debating. When Godzilla vs. Kong came out I subscribed to HBO, watched it, then unsubscribed. I did the same thing for Suicide Squad. I did the same thing for Halloween Kills on Peacock. In all instances I was able to watch a brand new movie, at home, for considerably less than a theater experience. I will happily pay $5 to watch Prehistoric Planet. It's no different than renting a movie. You're not making a blood oath when you subscribe to a streaming service.

Capitalism = quality

Capitalism sure has its downfalls, but you wouldn't have high quality broadcasts (or high quality dinosaur toys) in a socialistic society. There is no incentive to go above-and-beyond when you won't get rewarded any more than the lazy schmuck standing next to you. (China may be an exception to this, but their market functions more as a capitalistic one)

Capitalism forces companies to produce better and better quality in the competitive market it creates. :)
The free market is a sham, companies don't compete they just negotiate and divide up territories so they can gouge us.

Apple makes phones so that they break within 3-4 years. Gen 1-2 iPhones still work, while newer ones don't, only conclusion; it's this way by design. My Nokia brick still works, but with all their wonderful technology, all their advancements, we're supposed to believe modern phones can only last a few years? Yah right. Apple has been sued over this multiple times.

ISP's meet and negotiate territories with one another so they don't have to compete, many even bribe "sponsor" local governments to get co-op internet services banned.

Quote from: bmathison1972 on April 06, 2022, 10:13:39 PMHence there are no major companies producing high quality animal toys in Canada (wink wink)
I'd rather not be known as a manufacturing hub than not be able to afford medical care "wink wink"...

Canada has plenty of industry and isn't in any way a non-capitalist country, we just have policies in place that draw influence from socialist ideologies and concepts (and we still have a long way left to go). There are less people total in Canada than in California, not exactly a shock we don't have as many companies forming as the entire United States (which still only has what, three or four in this particular field?).

Mixed economies win every time. Purist capitalist economies end up being consumed by their own corporations, while purist communist economies end up failing to enforce checks and balances on government.

America is a lot more socialist than typically thought. Farming and trucking are sustained almost entirely through subsidies, and let's not forget no taxing of (often for profit!) churches... not exactly leftists arguing for those policies, but socialism all the same.

I wasn't even trying to present some sort of argument in favour of digital piracy, nor planning to do so myself by any means, just saying that valid reasons do exist. But after reading up again about Apple designing products to fail deliberately, I think I might just be feeling a little more misery with my $5 ($10 here*). Which, for those of us living meal to meal, is well, a meal.

*And look at that, they charge $10 here and $5 in the US, despite that not being an accurate conversion. Isn't it great living up here in communist Canada where everything is magically free and we never produce any goods or services for ourselves which I bet is why we get Americans coming up here to buy life saving insulin and epinephrine...

If digital piracy is bad because it takes money away from creators, why would it matter to pirate from large corporations who don't pay their employees justly and subject them to unreasonable crunch anyway? If that's the reason, shouldn't we be ever more choosy about supporting small companies, ethically managed companies, or creators directly and not large companies whenever we can help it? If that's not the reason, what is?

If that reason is that it's bad because "it just is", that's because it rocks the proverbial Neo-liberal boat. Neo-liberalism is designed to justify social inaction through idealization of meritocracy and fixation on politics through an economic lens. Not paying companies is bad, full stop, all situations, because introspection of this concept forces us to look at economics from the perspective of social problems, which is the opposite of how we've been trained to perceive politics.

The decision to purchase a product, purchase an illegitimate copy of a product, or obtain a product illegitimately without paying anyone, are all deeply personal and incredibly situational decisions that people should not be shamed for, whatever they decide to choose, as long as they did so without intent to harm others.

To get back on topic, I love these designs! The very subtle feathers on the adult look great, and the baby is very pretty with its stronger patterns. The stork like "lashes" on it are an interesting detail.

Are those real sea turtles? Some moments look like they are, but sometimes the movements look more like CGI.

Never thought I'd be seeing someone equate capitalism to quality. Also I don't know where the myth comes from that we wouldn't have this stuff under a socialist society? We'd literally be getting paid our worth to make shit like this instead of corps stealing the wages. Sorry as this is off topic but just had to chime in. Really hope they drop another clip for this soon or confirm how long each segment will be.

suspsy

That is hands down the best depiction of Tyrannosaurus rex I've seen in any media to date. I love that it's the father taking care of the babies for a change. I wonder if the mother is simply off hunting or if the father is the sole caregiver just like an emu or a cassowary. Looking forward to finding out. Looking forward to watching them swim too.

So do we know if this is gonna be a single show or spread out through episodes like WWD.
Keep calm and love dinosaurs

1stly, many thanks for saying that so I don't have to :)

2ndly, I too hope for more clips, especially of the Velociraptor (which is 1 of my favorite dinos for reasons discussed elsewhere: http://dinotoyblog.com/forum/index.php?topic=10177.0 ). To quote Naish ( https://archive.ph/91nKn ), "it seems that Velociraptor behaved like a giant, ground-running hawk." Given Naish's involvement & the hawk-like appearance of PhP's Velociraptor, I'm hopeful that there'll be lots of hawk-like behavior, maybe even a mated pair or family group :D

Based on the fact that, in the trailer, they're swimming away w/no mother in sight, probably the latter (which is especially interesting for reasons discussed in post #29: https://dinotoyblog.com/forum/index.php?topic=7869.msg316564#msg316564 ).

So sad I won't be able to watch this.
Hoping for a DVD / Blu-ray release one day.

I have Apple TV, and I will certainly subscribe to Apple TV+ for this. Maybe also buy the Blu-rays when they comes out (I mean, isn't that likely?).

Or simply free if you wait until it's all out and watch it in the 7 day trial which I believe is renewed each year[...]I've watched 3 full shows on AppleTV and paid for no more than one month": https://www.reddit.com/r/Naturewasmetal/comments/tuea4d/the_teaser_trailer_for_prehistoric_planet_on/i33e3br/

Are those the only dates when someone can actually watch this series?

Fembrogon

I highly doubt it's a limited-time event; more likely this is just the initial release schedule, which is compromising between more traditional weekly release schedules and more modern binge-stream release schedules.

New trailer to look forward to tomorrow :D Also, I love the close-up of the PhP Velociraptor's foot :) I wonder if it's meant to be a reference to this WWD moment:

Always nice to see a Triceratops where it belongs: lying defeated and dead before the feet of Tyrannosaurus rex! ;)
