A new paper (open access \o/ )  just described a new genus and species of theropod dromaeosaur, the unenlaginae Ypupiara lopai based on a small fragment of maxilla with teeth. The sad thing is the specimens appears to have been lost in the Museu Nacional fire. The paper was already in process of being submited at the time.  :-[

Gothmog the Baryonyx

Lovely Unenlagine,  a shame that it's remains are already lost before it was even named. That makes this one extra tragic.

Oh that's horrible. I was just recently reminded of this tragic event after reading up on Irritator/Angaturama, and Oxalaia (which may belong to Spinosaurus) may have had their remains destroyed in it. Who knows what also may have been forever lost now unfortunately. At least they were able to study it before it was destroyed and have photographs of the fossils to be reminded of, and possibly referenced from if need be. I guess this is a similar situation to the loss of fossils during WWII bombings, but with vastly different circumstances this time.

In any case I'm always glad to see an open access paper, and the reconstruction there is quite beautiful too, even if for an animal with fragmentary remains. I guess most of it could be attributed to its better known relatives like Buitreraptor.
