And say hello to Monquirasaurus boyacensis, the newest giant pliosaur!

Darn it is blocked through a pay wall. I am intrigued though.

This thread could equally be titled "Say goodbye to Kronosaurus, full stop."  :'(

It isn't just K. boyacensis that gets the chop in this paper, it's Kronosaurus the genus as well. The authors restricted 'Kronosaurus' to the scrappy and undiagnostic holotype specimen, so it is invalid. The Harvard 'Plasterosaurus' and other well known referred Kronosaurus material – the creature we all think of when we think of Kronosaurus – is referred to another new genus Eiectus .

So, if this all stands up to scrutiny, your Carnegie Kronosaurus toy is now an Eictus toy...

Lynx

Holy- well, that was a very sharp turn of events. Now PNSO's Kronosaurus is officially Eictus...

I've edited the title. Eiectus is a most underwhelming name.

I guess the PNSO figure is now just a highly speculative reconstruction based on a non-diagnostic holotype. Dang!

The paper will probably get a rebuttal since it's so easy to assign Krono a neotype. These authors just wanted that sweet sweet press release and 5 minutes of fame

avatar_GojiraGuy1954 @GojiraGuy1954 Agreed with the discussion in that thread. I can't say I'm a fan of the turn of events, plus the fact the paper is paywalled, which means I can't even review what they've done here, to come to my own conclusions beyond how avatar_DinoToyForum @dinotoyforum explained it, and that thread.

Kronosaurus was one of my favorite marine reptiles. This new name just isn't as exciting to me. It also just got added to JWE2 as well. Way to make a hot mess of it all. It feels like the Troodon thing all over again but at least Stenonychosaurus was an existing name brought back into use (+ the new Latenivenatrix).

...or BlueEiectus, as the Marx Kronosaurus was surely inspired by the Harvard skeleton of Kronosaurus.

Obviously, keep 'BlueKrono' anyway!  >:D

. . . why would you say such a thing like that?

Renaming krono does more harm than good to Pliosaur palaeontology.

I wouldn't change it, keep your name it sounds cool and Eictus sounds like the name of one of Julius Ceasar's cooks or something.  The guy that made eggs for breakfast  >:D

No, not really, even if some people don't like the change. And it's pretty insulting to accuse the authors of only being concerned about fame.

Yeah, this is a hard pill to swallow. Since I can't access the paper, is the Krono holotype really so disparate in quality to validate reclassifying everything else?

Yeah, the holotype of Kronosaurus is a small fragment of mandible. The authors haven't done anything wrong but another possible course of action would be to designate a Kronosaurus neotype specimen in a petition to the ICZN. The obvious neotype specimen for Kronosaurus would be the Harvard specimen (now the holotype of Eiectus.)

Shonisaurus

My entire childhood universe is collapsing for me, first it was the tsintaosaurus (goodbye to the unicorn-dinosaur), then the elasmotherium (it seems that it had a not exactly that big horn) and now the kronosaurus is called Eiectus.

Bread

Huh... now I am thinking about parting with CollectA's Kronosaurus and in favor for PNSO's.

Faelrin

avatar_DinoToyForum @dinotoyforum I think that would have been a more ideal solution, considering the historical significance this genus has.
