Nanuqsaurus

Hey all,

I was wondering which dinosaurs have the coolest sounding/most beautiful names in your opinion! Maybe you can explain why you think this name is so cool/beautiful as well. Names of other prehistoric creatures are welcome too, of course. :))

I'll start of with my favorites:
- Paralititan , just rolls of the tongue so nicely, and ''Tidal Giant'' is just an awesome name.
- Sauroposeidon, love how it sounds like ''sauropod'' but then suddenly changes into the name of the Greek god of oceans and earthquakes. :P
- Tyrannotitan, because everything with either ''tyrant'' or ''titan'' sounds awesome, so it's double awesome when you combine them into one name!

I don't know if I have favorite names per se but here's my categories of dinosar names, best to worst:

  • names that don't come from Greek or Latin, especially if they use the indigenous languages of a colonized region (ex. Nanuqsaurus!)
  • names that creatively describe the animal's appearance/inferred behavior/location
  • place names[/i]
    • names that use the name of a person

You mean you like it when indigenous languages are used? Like Tsagaan, Shuvuuia, Mei etc.?
And dislike it when the name of a person is used? The worst example I can think of is Drinker. If anyone knows any really stupid or funny dinosaur names, you can go ahead and post them here as well![/list]

Halichoeres

I'm also a big fan of names that use indigenous languages. Tlacuatzin isn't a dinosaur, but it's one of my favorite genus names all the same. I like descriptive names too, but I hate honorifics. Sometimes they're sort of called for by propriety, such as when specimens were donated or were found on someone's land and you want to thank them, but they're very unhelpful names.

Particular favorites: Stygimoloch--whether it's valid or not, it's a great name.
Tupuxuara
Euoplocephalus
Azhdarcho
In the kingdom of the blind, better take public transit. Well, in the kingdom of the sighted, too, really--almost everyone is a terrible driver.

Viergacht

Parasaurolophus always struck me as being particularly euphonious.

Flaffy

For me, my top three names are:
Most beautiful: Zhenyuanlong
Strangest: Yi Qi
Coolest: (not a dinosaur) Estemmenosuchus
;D ;D ;D

Carcharodontosaurus

My favorites:

Skorpiovenator- such a cool name!

Rugops- adorable and ridiculous, because it translates to "Wrinkle Face"

Pyroraptor- Raptor + fire = AWESOME

Bambiraptor- Cutest dinosaur name ever!

Afrovenator- Epic name! If only he actually had an afro. 😉

Ostafrikasaurus- I love how its name rolls of the tongue, especially the "Freak" part.

Dracorex- Epic name, especially if you are a Harry Potter fan!

Irritator- Cool name with a cool back story.

Becklespibnax- I love it because of how ridiculous it sounds.

Pawpawsaurus- OK, maybe this is the cutest dinosaur name.

Medusaceratops- It's Medusa in dinosaur form! What more could you want?

I have a list of silliest names!

Cumnoria- named after Cumnor Hurts (I don't think i need to spell out why this one is funny)

Drinker- named after edward drinker cope (This dinosaur was a little heavy on the sauce)

Silesaurus- probably named after silesia (But it totally looks like it is pronounced silly)

Haya- probably with an indigenous word (but I mean, come on, it is literally; Hiya!)

Dysalotosaurus- "Uncatchable lizard" (This dinosaur made a lot of rude comments as a form of defense)

Kukufledia- "Cuckoo's Field" (This dinosaur went something for coco puffs)

Batyrosaurus- Batyr warriors of Kazakstan are what this one was named after (This went completely insane, if you catch my drift)

Bolong- "Small dragon" (Something used for an activity that old white conservatives are vehemently against, in the USA at least)

Fukuisaurus, Fukuiraptor, Fukivenator, Fukuititan- all of these animals are from Fukui Japan (But come on, it's right on the nose for those fluent in English slang)

Adelolophus- "Unknown Crest" (Either it is rolling in the deep, or saying hello)

Angulomastacator- "Bend Chewer" (Come on, the last part of its name)

Blasisaurus- Named after the Blasi 1 site it was found at (Sounds funny, though)

Isisaurus- Named after the Indian Statistical Institute, go figure (You DO NOT want to mess with these dinosaurs' holy book, they will mess you up!)

Nipponosaurus- "Japanese lizard" (The informal word for a certain human, and bovine, body part)

Tatisaurus- name in reference to Da di or Ta ti (Come one, just read above)

Homalocephale- Even head (I don't want to get political, but these dinosaurs just won a right not too long ago in the US, right?)

Coronosaurus- "Crown Lizard" (This one likes to sit on the beach and drink a 'delicious' fermented beverage)

Bagaceratops- "Small horned face" (Good thing this genus is not ugly; it might need to but something brown and papery over its head in shame)

Lamaceratops- "Lama horned face" (Don't let Carl hear about this one, he might get obsessive)

Gojirasaurus- Godzilla lizard" (King of the Monsters)

Pantydraco- Named after a well in Wales (An animal that started a clothing industry)

Betasuchus- "B Crocodile" (This dinosaur is such a wimp, not like the Alphasuchus)

Irritator- well, you know "Irritator" (This one does not hide behind latin, it was straight up annoying)

Gasosaurus- "Gas Lizard" (The flatulence produced by this theropod was so noxious, it caused the mass extinction)

Saurophaganax- "Lizard Eater" (More like, lizard+cigarette. What? you thought I was going to say something else? Gah! How discriminatory!)

Alectrosaurus- "Alone Lizard" (This one was too busy fiddling with cables and computers, it had not time for friends...or mates)

Dyptosaurus- "Tearing lizard" (You could say tear, but you could also say tear [tee-ear] and you would be right. This theropod always had a cold)

Labocania- Named after the "La Bocania Roja" (Also a reference to a certain part)

Hope none a'yall get too offended! I had some fun!

Haha, well cute dinosaur names are allowed too of course! :P
By the way, I think Carcharodontosaurus is an awesome dinosaur name as well! A dinosaur named after a shark... can't get much cooler than that!

Yutyrannus

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Harpagornis yet. That's one of my absolute favourites :). I also really like:
Yutyrannus (...obviously ;D)
Sigilmassasaurus
Guanlong
Zhenyuanlong
Deinonychus
Pyroraptor
Balaur
Anchiornis
Leaellynasaura (possibly the most beautiful dinosaur name from where I'm standing, or at least very close)
Aquila
Sauroposeidon
Diplodocus
Aquilops
Ugrunaaluk
Nanuqsaurus
Shuvuuia
Ichthyovenator

Yeah, I love it when they do that too...I was pretty disappointed when the Welsh theropod was named Dracoraptor, I was really hoping it would get a Welsh name.

I also forgot about the ancient penguin Anthropornis (This genus has a subscription to something specific)

For cool names, there's also Atrociraptor,  It doesn't get much cooler than that! Also, Aerodactylus is pretty great.

To me, the weakest names are the ones based entirely on the locality of the fossil. I understand that it's useful, but Utahceratops? Argentinosaurus? It's like reading a map.

That's what I like about Antarctosaurus' genus name.   :o

As far as my own opinions I think Miragaia just sounds naturally suiting to the animal it describes. Dynamosaurus also has a nice ring to it even if it isn't valid.

Gasosaurus isn't named because it could produce flatulence, it was named in reference to a Chinese state-run petroleum company that found the holotype of Gasosaurus constructus. Ernst Stromer coined the name Carcharodontosaurus for Megalosaurus saharicus after he noticed that the teeth of IPHG 1922 X46 (which reminded him of those of the great white shark) were very identical to the syntype teeth of this taxon from the Albian-Cenomanian of Timimoun, Algeria, which is less than 1,000 km east of the neotype locality for C. saharicus.

I don't know enough English to find the funny part in that ... in Spanish it sounds funny because "Vaga" means "lazy (feminine)", so a lazy female ceratopsian.

But my favourite name is not from a dinosaur but ... Kaikaifilu  ^-^

And dinosaurs ... atrociraptor sounds really cool. And Laellynasaura sounds armonic.

Irritator (funny) and Miragaia (pretty)

edit: and I love when dinosaurs are named in an indigenous language, even more so in colonized areas!
