Quote from: ceratopsian on May 31, 2023, 08:57:08 AMWhile I'd have preferred a Permian stem mammal not already represented in my collection (which leaves a huge choice!), I appreciate the logic of the sentiments about supporting the choice of anything from that group and period. I could still be tempted. But they wouldn't display well together for me as I had Martin repaint and base the CollectA offering.

I think thats a sign to have Martin paint up the Safari one as well to get matching pair 8)

If this does indeed turn out to be Estemmenosuchus, and by all accounts it will, I won't be getting it. I would LOVE to have another Safari therapsid, but I have the CollectA one, which is too good to replace so soon.

I have high hopes for this one. The eye has the Doug Watson look. For some reason a never warmed up to the CollectA one.

A couple tweets from Safari just further confirming Estemmenosuchus.

This one was a retweet, but still works

I'm very excited for this one!

A small part of me likes to believe that my request contributed to the existance of the 2023 Estemmenosuchus; realistically though the figure was probably on the pipeline for a couple of years, not dissimilar to most other Safari figures.

Only a matter of hours till the full reveal now... can't wait! ;D

JimoAi

I saw the figure, all I can say it looks like it's eaten something it shouldn't have

Jose S.M.

I saw it already. As always the outdoor photos look way better than the white background ones. I think it looks very good but a different color scheme would have helped, although I can't picture any color schemes for this animal, somehow I always end up picturing it in browns and greys

suspsy

It's a great-looking sculpt, but I'm not fond of the colours. I'll be sticking with the CollectA version.

I think it looks pretty good, the colours are definitely the worst part but they are not really bad. I do think out of all the releases this year the Majungasaurus is my favourite thus far. Im quite happy we got a Permian species, hopefully more will be made in future.

As promised, here's my review for it. I totally dig the color scheme. Seems appropriate for a stem-mammal. Much better than CollectA's gaudy color palatte. I'm glad I never picked up CollectA's with this one now available.

The reviews have already popped up;
Like the face; it's reminescent of a mammal. The overall sculpt is nice and accurate. The body and the hues of brown reminds me of a Hippopotamus. My only nitpick may be the colour. The colors on Safari ltd's most recent figures feel same-ish with the tones of yellow. Such as on the Shringasaurus or the Patagotitan. The Estemmenosuchus is a bizarre yet unique primitive genus. because of its facial ornamentation and I think this is why Kenner, Safari Ltd and CollectA released one. If all these companies released one; especially Kenner, I hope to see Mattel release one in the future. All in all, nice figure, I feel it's more realistic than CollectA's because of the color scheme and because of the sculpt. CollectA's version is great too.

Edit: I have read avatar_Gwangi @Gwangi's review on the Dinosaur Toy Blog and after seeing the images there, the color of the underside of the body is more orange than yellow. I guess the lighting in the Youtube videos made the underside of the body appear more yellowish. I take back what I've said about the colors; I like the warm colors; they are realistic and reminiscent of a modern-day Hippopotamus. The stocky body and creases on the neck remind me the same. I feel it's more realistic than CollectA's; in terms of the coloration and the sculpt  though both are based on the same species; E. mirabilis.

Faelrin

The colors might not be the most exciting, but they look natural to me for a large therapsid. The sculpt is definitely good. I'm very much looking forward to adding this one to my collection eventually. It will fit in right alongside the Inostrancevia and Scutosaurus in my collection. That said this also adds to the pile of the constant yellow and browns many of the other prehistoric Safari Ltd figures use. At least this year's Majungasaurus and Utahraptor break that trend (and last year's Albertosaurus and Cryolophosaurus, not counting the Dino Dana stuff).

Just as I went to post the reviews, folks beat me to the punch lol.

I would say the orange sets this apart from other brown figures.

These "who's first? reviews" are tiring.

I like the figure - Safari's best in a while, if you ask me. I'd like to have it.
But I'm not sure if it will ever be available in Germany. Not even all 2022 figures have been released here.

Faelrin

S @Shane After seeing it in avatar_Gwangi @Gwangi review I definitely did see what you meant about the orange. So it's more brown and orange, then brown and yellow. When I made my earlier post it was based on seeing youtube thumbnails and the coloration was probably a bit off in those. Definitely a mix of dull and vibrant, if that makes any sense. I mean comparing it to the Inostracevia, in the comparison pic in avatar_Gwangi @Gwangi review the orange belly and face coloration definitely pops.

I think this makes perfect sense and is a good way to describe the effect.

Stegotyranno420

I love it.  Took me back to 2010-13 with the Inostravencia and Scutosaurus

Carnoking

After watching some reviews I can honestly say this is my favorite release from them so far this year.

Bread

As I figured, I'll have to buy both the CollectA and now this one. I think a solid repaint of the two with a base would make an excellent diorama. The sculpts are both wonderful.
