Did the authors choose these names specifically to get more attention for their findings? Almost certainly. Am I granting their wish? Well, yeah.

This is the holotype of Punk ferox:

It's one of two shell-less, wormlike molluscs from the Silurian of England. The other is Emo vorticaudum. Both are named after music genres, based on the fringe of spicules arrayed on what is presumably their dorsal surface, which put the authors in mind of hairstyles associated with the fans of each.

These were appropriately named lol. Very fascinating looking critters, and from the Paleozoic too.

At first, just by looking at the title, I thought, why doesn´t he put this in our music thread? Little did I know scientists named species after music genres ^-^  Now I am waiting for bacteria called "Metal" or an unicellular named "Techno" ;D

Maybe a geologist could rename chalk "Soft Rock". ;D

And Iridium could be renamed "Heavy Metal".

I could also imagine a new ichnospecies called 'Dubstep'. ;)
