Quote from: Libraraptor on March 02, 2025, 08:22:36 PMOh, I´ve never seen this book with that cover.  :o My copy has a Gorgonopsid on its cover. So you seem to have a newer edition. But yes, I also recommend this book very much, for it is settled at the intersection of art, palaeontology and social science. A must-read!

Yes, as I understand it, this is a reprint edition after the original run sold out. I was curious to see if this new one was expanded upon in any way, so I picked it up during their recent sale but it seems more or less the same. That said, I definitely prefer the old cover!

So do I.

Looking at the Taschen Website:
https://www.taschen.com/de/books/art/03421/palaeo-art-darstellungen-der-urgeschichte/
German Edition still has the Gorgonopsid

https://www.taschen.com/en/books/art/03421/paleoart-visions-of-the-prehistoric-past
English Edition got the Tyrannosaur

I hope this is true, since I still need to get the book and I think that the Tyrannosaur looks kinda strange, as if it is some sort of composite.
Jurassic Park is frightning in the dark
All the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things'll harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend
Oh no

I have the same one as you!
But when I looked it up on their website, only the German one had that cover and the English had the cover I posted here, so I used that one. But could also be different editions!

Quote from: ZelSeraph on March 02, 2025, 08:14:12 PMI can recommend "Paleoart".
This book has a ton of art, a bunch of them printed across double pages you can unfold.
Mostly paintings, but also for example mosaics.
It is a collection of art from 1830 to 1990, so you will see a lot of dinosaurs more akin to dragons or oversized lizards. It's so interesting to see what people back then imagined.
There's also other prehistoric animals featured in it.

This is a big, beautiful book and an absolute must have for anyone who is at all interested in our evolving representation of prehistoric creatures through art! I have both editions. I would actually love to see Taschen publish a follow up with a focus on paleoart from the 90s to modern day. Of course there are plenty of wonderful modern day paleo-art art books on the market already and even more to come, but the size and presentation of a Taschen book is unmatched!

Oh yes, I would love for them to publish a follow-up. The quality of their books is amazing, I have a lot of Taschen books but sadly this is the only one dealing with prehistoric art.

Yeah, how cool would a follow-up be! But I fear the author - Zoe Lescaze - isn´t interested in a follow-up. As much as I value her approach, her style and her remarkable hard work,  you could read between the lines that she didn't really deal with a heart's desire.
The first English edition, by the way, had a golden Gorgonopsid head on its cover, too.

Yeah, I have the gorgonopsid English version.

The Princeton Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs might be of interest, but I'm not familiar w/either Jones or Viola, so I'm not sure what to expect: https://press.princeton.edu/books/hardcover/9780691250212/the-princeton-encyclopedia-of-dinosaurs-theropods

Huh, that's interesting. Something to keep an eye on. And it probably won't have Greg Paul's idiosyncratic taxonomy.

I recommend Armin Schmitt´s book

"The Lost World of the Dinosaurs: A Comprehensive Guide To The Natural World of Dinosaurs"

https://www.amazon.de/Lost-World-Dinosaurs-Uncovering-Prehistoric/dp/1335081216?

I know the author in person (just been talking to him this morning). His book belongs on the bookcase of every palaeo-enthusiast.

I actually purchased this on a whim during some Barnes & Noble sale. Glad to know it's recommended!

Certainly wasn't expecting this before May but I'm not complaining. Thumbing through it, it promises to make for some awesome reading!

"The Iguanodon´s Horn" was what we were going to call our next book... but this one beat us to it. :|| So, we had to go back to the drawing board.

Yes, I'm a little confused at the moment. I pre-ordered mine from Thriftbooks and checking my account and the order number, it is still listed as being on pre-order with an estimated ship date of May 13th. I'm not sure what's going on with their system  ????

Speaking of King Tyrant, I just found out that Princeton Press is having a 50% off sale for a lot of their books until the end of the month so now is the time to get those Gregory S. Paul field guides and whatever else you might be interested in! Hone's latest book on dinosaur behavior is also included in that sale, and maybe King Tyrant will be discounted right out of the gate when it releases!

No, despite the title being identical, the theme of our book is quite different, so we were able to come up with a different title.

My copy of 'Jurassic Park: The Official Script Book: Complete with Annotations and Illustrations' by James Mottram arrived the other day. I'm really enjoying it. It's based on Koepp's 1992 working screenplay, which contains bits and pieces that weren't used in the final film (it's not a transcript of the movie), and there's a lot of concept art I haven't seen before, despite already owning "Making of" books. So, I'm learning things I never knew. It's just a shame about the T. rex in the cover art being a bit poor, but overlook that! It's also 39% off on Amazon US right now: https://amzn.to/43vy9NT

A friend asked me to read a book called "Extinction", by Douglas Preston. So I picked it up a few hours ago and just finished. At first, my mind immediately thought it was going to be a Cenozoic Jurassic Park type of book, but I was pleasantly surprised. I'd give it a 4/5.
