Oh wow! That is news to me. Might have to get that toy after all!

EDIT: Or, maybe not?  ????

"John H. Ostrom (1969) noted that the claw of digit II (the innermost toe) was larger than those of digits III and IV, and suggested that this digit may have borne a modified sickle claw similar to that of Deinonychus.[49] However, as both Ostrom (1969) and Paul (1988) noted, the poor preservation of digit II makes this hypothesis difficult to confirm."

Dryosaurus and the other herbivore are exciting because of how "bland" they are. Ornitholestes would've been more interesting if it didn't have sickle claws; we've got plenty of raptors already.

This sounds like it doesn't confirm or outright deny it. It's within the realm of possibility and is a recent trend that plenty of other paleoartists have depicted (in fact I'm surprised less people have known about it until now).
I'm sure sculptors online will have replacement feet by then.

Dilopho

I don't see why it matters too much anyways when the rest of the figure is clearly not on model to the real thing, it's all chunky and big headed

But yes, Ornitholestes has been depicted with the raised claw a lot. It's nothing new at all.

It's nice to see Mussaurus, this figure probably will be close to the size of the iconic baby Mussaurus fossil which is neat. It should be able to pose with its arms off of the ground too, looking at it. I'm sure it can be done with the right balance.

These three are neat! My favourite is the Dryosaurus. Does that jaw articulate though?

Faelrin

That Ornitholestes is certainly a step up from their previous one (which is more coelophysoid like). Better head shape. Dryosaurus has been on my wishlist from them so I'm glad to see it, especially after this year's Hypsilophodon and Iani. Hope the coloration reflects either JPOG or JWE. Hard to tell here. Mussaurus is another nice pick but I still adore the 2019 one for what it is worth.

That said still plenty of film creatures to do, and I'm hoping they aren't getting over looked with non canon animals now.

Dryosaurus is the best of the bunch and depending on size a sure buy for me.  Ornitholestes is an easy pass.  Not well shaped, goofy feet and would have been more interesting with feathers...poor effort for a HC, imo.  Mussaurus is supposed to be a juvenile i guess.  Interesting choice.  Surprising choice for a HC.

If Mattel will make these for the HC line, they'll make anything for the HC line, so that's potential fun going forward.  Are these coming out this year?

SpartanSquat

I heard rumors of novel species coming to the line next year instead of movie dinos.
Ngl I would love some movie stuff like indominus or a new rex based in rebirth ones.

If they go to novel species, I would love to see cearadactylus, maiasaura, euoplocephalus and styracosaurus.
With the last 3 ones, Mattel could rescue HC medium dinos, last ones we got were metri, irri and cory.

Note the dryo with open mouth looks like dryo is screaming for the eternity
Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis and the rise of the sons of Aryas, there was an age undreamed of. And unto this, Conan, destined to wear the jeweled crown of Aquilonia upon a troubled brow. It is I, his chronicler, who alone can tell thee of his saga. Let me tell you of the days of high adventure!

Huh, these are surprising. I don't have any HC figures so I hope the Dryosaurus and Mussaurus have decent distribution.

A new Metri and a new revised Certo would be great!

andrewsaurus rex

i guess Metri is Metriacanthosaurus?  What is Certo?  Is that Ceratosaurus?  Some of our abbreviations are starting to get hard to figure out...lol.

I swear I remember posting yesterday, yet there is no post to be seen...

Anyway, I've been wanting a Dryosaurus for a long time so this makes me happy. However I can help to notice how underwhelming Mattel's SDCC announcement have been these last years, the reveals are mostly small figures and/or mainline stuff.

It's SDCC, you should bring the heavy artillery! Indominus rex, Quetzalcoatlus, Pteranodon, any medium dinosaur from the films, something exciting!

crazy8wizard

How long do we think it'll be before we start to see Hammond Collection figures for Rebirth Dinosaurs? For Dominion it was about a year in general and 2 years for the bigger and more popular ones.

Faelrin

#1092
avatar_crazy8wizard @crazy8wizard A bit over a year. Dominion came out in June 2022, whereas the first Dominion HC figure, the Dimetrodon came out in early 2024 if I recall (part of the wave with Blue, and Owen, and was just after the Carnotaurus released in late 23). Giganotosaurus, Pyroraptor, Therizinosaurus followed during the summer (2 year mark), with Ghost in late 24/early 25.

I imagine two years would be enough time. All the same I'm not sure what they could do in that time, aside from more raptor repaints/retools, Indominus rex, maybe Indoraptor, Quetzalcoatlus (Dominion), Telltale game Herrerasaurus (since they did the Troodon, even though paint is off). They are doing filler species now with Scutosaurus and these novel ones with no film designs to pull from (aside from prior Irritator), although Dryosaurus is present in fan favorite JPOG and JWE games that I hope they referenced from when designing it. Humans have essentially been killed from the line. Nasutoceratops and Sinoceratops might be feasible in the large scale (think Allo, Carno, Stego, and Theri). A proper widespread buck release would be good, but I'm doubtful.

Film canon animals left:

Spoiler
Tiny (highly unlikely this many years into the line when none have been done either as accessories, multipacks, whatever):
Anurognathus (Rebirth)
Aquilops (Rebirth)
Compsognathus
Lystrosaurus
Microceratus
Moros intrepidus
Oviraptor

Small:
Atrociraptor Panthera, Red, and Tiger
Dimorphodon?
Mutadon (Rebirth)
Velociraptor Charlie and Echo
Velociraptor (Rebirth)

Medium or large:
Carnotaurus (Dominion)
Iguanodon
Indoraptor
Nasutoceratops
Parasaurolophus (Dominion)
Pteranodon (JPIII and JW)
Quetzalcoatlus (Dominion and Rebirth)
Sinoceratops

Extra large:

Distortus rex (Rebirth)

Indominus rex
Mosasaurus (JW and Rebirth)
Spinosaurus (Rebirth)
Tyrannosaurus (Rebirth)

Sauropods (unlikely since they do one XL figure a year, and it is typically a theropod. The JP Brachiosaurus was likely the exception):
Apatosaurus
Brachiosaurus (JPIII)
Dreadnoughthus
Mamenchisaurus
Titanosaurus
[close]
Camp Cretaceous/Chaos Theory (starting to doubt they'll do any of these):

Spoiler
Ankykosaurus Bumpy
Becklespinax
Carnotaurus Toro
Baryonyx Chaos, Grim, and Limbo (and leucistic)
Gallimimus Geba
Kentrosaurus Pierce
Monolophosaurus (black, green, orange)
Nothosaurus
Ouranosaurus
Pachyrhinosaurus
Parasaurolophus lux
Scorpios rex
Smilodon
Spinoceratops Angel & Rebel
Suchomimus
Tarbosaurus
[close]

I almost hope they do make a Nothosaurus HC figure, since it's one of only three (and a half?) Triassic animals actually in the series (not counting the park builder type games)

There's good reason to as well, the mainline Nothosaurus is grey but the one in the show is blue. Therefore even though they have the species covered, they haven't done the actual one from the show.

They actually revealed a new version of the JW Mosasaurus at SDCC, but people didn't notice.

Was lucky enough to nab the Convention Crasher set.

The star of the set is, of course, the Buck.

New upper head, new teeth....

... and new feet. Which raises the question, why did the original need such big feet?

The main body of the dino suit is soft rubbery plastic and mostly hollow; I suppose to simulate it being inflatable (and no doubt saves costs), though an unfortunate side effect is that it'll straight up launch the face if your not careful.

The swag is cute, but as someone who just camped out on the site during a lunch break at work it doesn't hit the way it's intended.

Same with the banner. If it was "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth" that'd been amazing, but "Fans" is referencing something I have absolutely no connection to.

TheCambrianCrusader

Huh novel dinos. Not a bad idea imo. There's still plenty of film dinos and cc/chaos theory dinos to pick from but this is an interesting choice. I wonder if they'd consider making a novel Dilo or Carno given how different they are from the films.

I also can't remember too well, did the novels describe these guy's appearances that much? All I can remember is that the Mussasaurus was teeny and that they torched the Ornitholestes corpse

By 'novel dinos' do you guys mean they are from JW/JP books (but not movies, games or cartoons) or do you mean they are new species not yet seen in the JP/JW world, which is what i thought you meant?

Novel as in the books. If they were just new species I'm sure we would instead call them...new species.
