I want to sculpt a 1:40 scale megalosaurus but I don't know how long that is in cm! If someone can tell me to figure it out eg 12m = 30cm or something like that please let me know what to divide it by :)

The most commonly listed length for Megalosaurus I think is 30 feet (9 meters), so I guess divided by 40, your project should have a length of 22.5 cm. :) Roughly 8 inches.

Recently I have seen some lower estimates of 7 meters so maybe you should made its smaller, maybe something between 7 and 9 meters?

So whats the equation I need to use then??

Simply take the total length and divide by 40.

However, I would point out that total length is usually a guess, unless a complete skeleton is known. A better method is to start with the total length of a known element such as a femur or skull and scale everything else to that. For example, say you know Megalosaurus had an 80 cm femur. If you have a good skeletal drawing of the animal, you can then measure everything else compared to that. Maybe the skull is 1.2 times as long as the femur; so (80 X 1.2) = 96 cm. Make a chart of these lengths, then divide all by 40 to find out how long they will be on your sculpture.

Also, if this is your first attempt at this sort of thing, it will be easier to start with a species known from more complete remains. If you want to stick with a megalosaurid, try Torvosaurus.

Thanks! I'm gonna go with Eustreptospondylus :)

I use this site: http://webpages.charter.net/sinkwich/sdventure/html/sd_scalecalc2.htm

Here is an example. Let's say I want to make a Stegosaurus in 1/40 size. The estimate from Wikipedia for the maximum length of Stegosaurus is 4.6m, which would be 460cm. Using the tool I linked above, I can find that a 4.6m Stegosaurus would be 11.5cms in 1/40.

If you struggle with mathematics, just use google to get conversions :)

I've made a new thread on the subject: http://dinotoyblog.com/forum/index.php?topic=4106.0

And thanks tyrantqueen on the info :)

I run my own line of models and I use this Website for figuring out the scale of an animal

First you enter the scale at the top(in this case 40)

http://jbwid.com/scalcalc.htm

What i do is i look up the Size of the Animal i wish to make in inches. to do this  I simply take the length of the animal in meters, and times it by 39(which equils one meter) , this will get you the length of the animal in inches. In the part that says input, you enter your result. then click the inches button on both boxes then it will get you the size of the model.

A Megalosaurus in 1:40 Scale would be 8.7 inches long if you did it like me.  Now i use a normal Scientific Calculator to figure out these things, but you can enter "Whats  9 meters in inches" on Google and it will give you a slightly bigger result then a calculator.
