Dusty Wren

Ahhh, Creature, the Eohippus turned out so well! Congrats on achieving some really beautiful color blends on it.

I like the black dorsal stripe and the black bar across the shoulders. They're small details, but they make nice focal points for the paint scheme.

Thank you! She's about to get entered into a photo show in model-horse-land, so we'll see how she does given that she's an equid, but not technically a horse.

Somehow I missed the finished product. It looks great! Kinda gives me duiker vibes.

Splendid work! Maybe she'll inspire the creation of a new category in future shows.

Creature

Oof, man, long time no post. The past six months have been...a lot.

She got 6th place in a fairly small class. There were more than 6 entries though, so at least she didn't just place by default!

This guy is the closest I've come to painting a dinosaur in a while. He's still a WIP. I probably would have finished already, but I'm trying to paint him entirely in acrylics, which are not my strong point. Still, he's got the requisite amount of sass a Loki needs.

Then, I finally got my act together and assembled my Masterpiece parasaurolophus. She still needs some prep work before she's ready to prime and paint, but man, she's massive. I think she's still smaller than my Mattel Super-Colossal dinosaurs, but somehow she's more imposing. Maybe because she's more realistic?

Speaking of JP dinosaurs, I also assembled this little guy. Well, "little." He's also 1/10, so while not enormous, he does still take up a fair amount of room.

Things are going to be hectic until summer around here, so I'm not sure how much further I'll get with any of these guys. I'll be moving soon, so I'm crossing my fingers for something big enough for dedicated studio space.

Can't wait to see what you do with the Masterpiece Para! Its a whopper, for sure. By far the biggest thing I have in my collection, but it totally deserves being a centerpiece. Masterpiece was working with some really good sculptors for a while there, bummed they don't seem to be doing much with their dino line anymore.

Oh man, yours was the first one I'd ever seen and I just fell in love. I stumbled on this one on eBay a while after it was retired and snapped it up. I'm still juggling paint ideas, but I've got it narrowed down to either Really Bright or something mostly white.

Its a really cool model- I'm a little surprised it isn't more popular, the price for size was very good for a kit. Then again the size is probably what keeps some collectors away. I had to install a dedicated shelf for mine haha

Both options sound interesting! Its got a lot of nice texture and detailing, I think even simpler schemes would work very nicely.

Wow, that Para is a beast! Get some nice weather-resistant paint on it and you can have some garden decoration.

The Loki-gator looks great! What do you usually use for painting if not acrylics?

Thank you avatar_Halichoeres @Halichoeres ! I usually paint the majority of a piece with PanPastels. The color blending with those is more intuitive to me. I use acrylics and sometimes pencils for detail work.

I currently have Mike Eischen's Mesohippus in primer, and this guy is going to follow suit tomorrow. I think I've filled in all the bubbles, but primer uncovers a multitude...

It's Medallion Madness Month in model horse land, and while I can't enter the Para in the event (I have a mule bas relief for that), I tend to like to work on two pieces at a time so I can work on one while the sealant on the other one is drying. So, fingers crossed, I'll have him done by the end of the month.

I got the first few layers of pastels on this guy. He wanted to be a Hot Topic goth, so...

Still got a long way to go, though. It's hard to get the pastels into those really deep sculpture lines. May have to rely on acrylic washes to get them fully painted.

Halichoeres

Looking good so far! With the pastels, are you able to you shape the tip into a chisel for crevices, or would they crumble if you did that?

They're powdered, so crumbling isn't the issue, it's just that the sculpture lines are really deep and thin, so the paintbrushes/sponges I use with the pastels don't want to go all the way in.

I'll figure it out though. I have made a bit more progress.
