Pachyrhinosaurus

So it looks like the episodes will be:

Jurassic Portugal
Lower Cretaceous North Africa
Cedar Mountain Formation
Upper Cretaceous Alberta
Hell Creek Formation

I'm not sure where the titanosaur fits in, whether it's included with the Hell Creek fauna or the sixth episode.

This is exceedingly pretty; and I am hesitant to be "demanding", but it sure seems weird that there's no sign of Stegosaurus here. Also, there's more than a trace of Dinosaurs in the Wild's Dakotaraptor in this Utahraptor, no?

Pliosaurking

I'll say I agree with others that Prehistoric Planet set the high bar, it's really going to take something to top that. Nonetheless I'm excited to see this!

I get that BBC very likely isn't working with Apple amounts of money, I do, but I have to be completely honest when I say that the CG here somehow looks worse than it did all the way back in the 90s.

And I genuinely feel bad saying that because I know how overworked and underpaid VFX artists can be, and maybe I'm jumping to conclusions based off a one minute trailer with potentially even unfinished CGI, but I'd be lying if I said this looks anywhere near as good as I was hoping it would given it marks the return of one of, if not the most iconic dinosaur docs of all time. Heck, I remember feeling more impressed by the first trailer of the 2013 Walking With Dinosaurs movie, and we all know what a dumpster fire that turned out to be.

I don't know, maybe Prehistoric Planet has just ruined me for all live action dinosaur media going forward. A sad thought indeed but at least we're no longer starved for choice

avatar_Carnoking @Carnoking I honestly agree. It was never going to look as good as Prehistoric Planet, and no one could possibly expect it to. Prehistoric Planet has the best CGI I've ever seen, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Avatar 2. But the visuals, animation, and the camerawork are super janky in a lot of this trailer.

I was very skeptical of this reboot from the start and prepared myself for much worse so this trailer has actually made me a little more excited for the show than I was before. It does seem like they're trying to tell natural-world stories with accurate, up-to-date dinosaurs, so the intent seems to be good. I guess that probably means more to me than lackluster visuals so I'm overall looking forward to see what comes of this.

Interesting to compare this new trailer with the 1999 series 'trailer':

i was rewatching Prehistoric Planet trailer on a daily basis
unfortunately, that's not the case with WWD2 :(

Paleomimi

Do you think we will get new merch with this new WWD? Both previous releases had some really fun toys, WWD 3D even had a video game on PS3! I'll be happy if we get merch as exciting with this new release.

I'm still unfamiliar with the way of humanizing animals in these documentaries. Can't grasp the exact feeling yet, I only have the impression that the "feelings card" is being drawn a little too often here.

Yeah, the little montage of parental nuzzles made my eyes roll. Prehistoric Planet did the same thing.

I think it will be a pretty good documentary, it just won't have the esence and feel of the original. However I already knew that the moment it was announced that the episodes would have human segments explaining the science. Add the lack of the original music composer, visual effects team and narrator (although the latter doesn't bother me, as I watched the OG series in Spanish) and you now there's no going back.

Visuals are not only a matter of budget but also time. If I recall correctly Prehistoric Planet had years of development, meaning that they probably had a lot of time to work on the effects both in the production and post-production, combine that with AppleTV's budget and you got the best looking CGI dinosaurs ever.

This series was announced in late 2023, and I'm 90% sure the BBC decided to make this after they saw Prehistoric Planet's success, so obviously they had a lot less time to work on it, plus the smaller budget.

Still excited, even if it's Walking with Dinosaurs in name only. I have a feeling the Spinosaurus episode would be the best one.

Dilopho

Aw, it's going to have parts with humans explaining stuff?

Halichoeres

I'll be surprised if there's merch. I think we'd have heard by now, right? I hope I'm wrong, though!

To quote Paleo Edits ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bt9RQ0yegjM&lc=UgyXiH9xFXsuWvv0rUp4AaABAg.AGsFNmmoj6-AGtP_TM06yX ), "110%, should've been the main trailer. It's more atmospheric, has better soundtrack and doesn't give away as much":

Speaking of Paleo Edits, I saw this comment on his post ( https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3pCbP4cInL8_aQ4im5cYVw/community?lb=Ugkxl8v4N7HZGH6niP-bFhR1DcWq9rUs0pZt ):
QuoteFor those complaining about the quality of the CGI, I would point out that the CG is quite good, but the color grading is way too unrealistic. This is an issue with all modern films/television shows. The OG walking With Dinosaurs let the lighting remain naturalistic, which improved the look of the old CG immensely. By matching real lighting, they were able to help the models blend in with the world. Try taking a still from the new WWD trailer (or any modern movie with CG) for that matter and make it black and white. It will look WAAAAAY better because the models will now match the lighting in the environment. I say all that to say: filmmakers, please stop meddling with the color. Let us see natural color the way nature actually looks IRL

Quote from: Flaffy on March 29, 2025, 01:11:43 AMSimon Mandez is a known photobasher that engages in art theft. Comparison credits to @ddinodan. Is this really the best the BBC could hire? Either the art recruiter was incredibly lazy in vetting their artists, or we're seeing a case of nepotism here. I'm sure there are plenty of credible paleoartists that would kill for the opportunity to work for a BBC WWD project.

Thank you for that. I thought the adult looked familiar, but I don't think I would've recognized the babies on my own. I just hope that the cover isn't representative of the whole book. AFAIK, the OG WWD books are illustrated w/stills from the series. I'd hate having to review this new book as negatively as I did Allosaurus :-\ : https://dinotoyblog.com/forum/index.php?topic=2210.msg331751#msg331751

Man I wish we got a book like that for Prehistoric Planet.

Ajax88

I'm actually a little crushed by how flat and lifeless this animation looks. Has nothing of the soul of the original. Lighting is a major factor, no one does contrast right in cgi, its all too washed out.

Prehistoric Planet will be uncontested for years to come.
