I never noticed it before either, but it is kind of hidden on the in box image (not sure about the other images out there). An interesting choice to say the least.

I bought this one too. It's a really nice sculpt but I've never seen a figure so in need of paint before.

Skorpio V.

I got the Torvoneustes recently and realized my Mattel collection is mostly comprised of Pseudosuchians!

I have the Gryposuchus, Kaprosuchus, Rauisuchus, Poposaurus, and now the Torvoneustes. I still need to get my hands on the Dakosaurus (still can't believe that wave didn't come to Canada - if someone can point me to a reasonable seller for Toronto, I'll be eternally grateful) and the completionist in me yearns for the Sarcosuchus and Postosuchus (moreso the latter).

That's how I feel about it too, and why I won't be getting it.  :-\

Mattel paintjobs are pretty minimalistic as is but what bothers me with the Spiclypeus is the lack of paint on the head. No paint on the beak, inside of the mouth, or any of the horns on the frill. Looks like one of those cheap basic-line toys. Sometimes they paint those bits and sometimes they don't, I don't like it when they don't. The sculpt looks good though, great candidate for a repaint.

No mouth paint was the kicker for me, the tongue, pallet, it's all green. Some dry brushing would do wonders with the detail it has though as Gwangi says.  That mouth though will need a total overhaul.

It's like...if you don't want to paint the inside of the mouth, just sculpt it closed.  ::)

hm.....thanks for the replies.  I was thinking of getting it as a low cost alternative to the BOTM, since i'm kinda ceratopsianed out (i have 8 BOTM ceratopsians) but would still like a representative of Spicly.

I guess i can doll up the head a bit, paint-wise.  For the mouth i could just stick some realistic plastic vegetation in there so the colour is not that noticeable.  Besides, the BOTM Dilophosaurus has a blue mouth, and everybody thinks it looks great.....don't see how this is that much different.

I wish the JW folks or Mattel would 'Rebirth' the stale old Ankylosaurus design and update it.

Same. I was never a fan of this Ankylosaurus design. But more than that I would just like them to make more large-size ankylosaur species.

Blade-of-the-Moon

Yeah BOTM pretty much killed my desire for ceratopsians for a long while.  lol

It's just that ALL green is all.

I do agree I really hoped we were getting a Euplocephalus instead.

Couldn't agree more.  The Borealopelta was really nice but so piddly small i passed on it.  Same with a couple of other of Mattel's ankylosaurs (but not their Ankylosaurus).  So piddly and out of scale.  Mattel makes nice sized, scale ceratopsians, why not ankylosaurs too?

To be fair, Borealopelta was smaller compared to Ankylosaurus, or even fellow nodosaurid Edmontonia which released this year (though not like Stegouros small), and I'm pretty sure it's also the third largest ankylosaur figure in the line so far.

Of the ones made so far (using measurements from wikipedia):

Ankylosaurus (6-8 meters)
Edmontonia (6.6 meters)
Borealopelta (5.5 meters)
Sauropelta (5.2–6 meters)
Gastonia (5-6 meters)
Yuxisaurus (4 meters?)
Minmi as Minmi (3 meters)
Minmi as Kunbarrasaurus (2.5-3.5 meters)
Stegouros (1.8-2 meters)
Jakapil (less then 1.5 meters)

But here's how the figures themselves size up from what I can gather from various reviews:

HC Ankylosaurus
Ankylosaurus (electronic)
Edmontonia (also has a short tail)
Jakapil (way oversized, should be in the same size class as Stegouros)
Borealopelta
Sauropelta (way too short tail)
Yuxisaurus
Gastonia (slightly smaller head then Yuxisaurus, and taller limb posture but about the same length)
Minmi (similar body size to the above two, but shorter tail)
Stegouros (the absolute smallest)

Come to think of it, I have everything except the Yuxisaurus so far and on hand (might get it eventually though). I should probably dig them out and get a size comparison for folks.

Edit: I forgot about the Jakapil and the HC Ankylosaurus, so I added them to the two lists. Although Jakapil is a basal thyreophoran, I figured it would be good to include it regardless. I also took two images, a top view, and side by side view. That said I forgot I had put Minmi in storage last year, so it's not included. I also went and took rough measurements of each (in inches). Height measurements are done with the hips (excluding osteoderms).

HC Ankylosaurus: 11-11.5 inches long, 4 inches tall
Ankylosaurus (electronic): 9.5-10 inches long, a little over 3 inches tall
Edmontonia: 7.5 inches long, 2.5 inches tall
Jakapil: 7 inches long, nearly 3 inches tall
Borealopelta: 7 inches long, 2.5 inches tall
Gastonia: 6.5-7 inches long, 2 inches tall
Sauropelta: 6-6.5 inches long, 2 inches tall
Stegouros: 4.5 inches long, 1.5 inches tall

Now that you mention it, it is pretty weird how Mattel hasn't produced a single other clubbed Ankylosaurid.
Anodontosaurus would make for an easily mattel-ifyable genus, what with its pointier tail club.
