Both these figures look quite good. Overall quite a nice, and diverse lineup for next year.

The Maip is extremely unappealing to me.  The Phorusrhacos on the other hand is very appealing to me.  There's only one problem I have with it, as someone else on Paleofiguras also noticed, it has exposed first fingers and totally lacks primary feathers.  This is almost certainly incorrect, birds with clawed fingers have them hidden by feathers.  No bird as an adult has exposed fingers as far as I know, including the seriema which are close relatives of phorusrhacids.

I thought for sure that we would be getting an updated version of a previously tackled genus, just like in the last few years. Guess CollectA felt like taking a break from that trend. I enjoyed it myself, but an assortment of all new animals is more than fine.

Not a fan of the Maip, just not a very interesting genus to me personally. The mohawk is very unappealing. I'm happy with my Kaiyodo version.

The Phorusrhacos is slightly more intruiging, but the wings are a concern. Either the wing sculpt is just a bit muddled, or it genuinely is missing its primary feathers.

Overall a decent assortment. I'll be picking up the Gallimimus, Furcatoceratops and Jaekelopterus. Ingentia and the two Cenozoics are maybes. Wish the Prionosuchus, Lystrosaurus and Supersaurus from the rumour list were real... Oh well, maybe next year?

Yes. It's not their biggest assortment, but seven toys is a decent number.

True, just nothing I really feel like I need to pickup I guess this time. Thanks for the info!

Nice to see another terror bird from someone other then Japanese companies lately. Wings aside, I like the coloration it has, especially that bright red beak. It's also been ages since they did their Kelenken too. I think the Maip is the weakest of these reveals honestly. I think Kaiyodo's version of that genus is much better despite its smaller scale.

The mohawk strikes me as a very tacky and amateurish in its execution. That single aspect really brings down the figure for me unfortunately. It might've worked on a smaller flashier dinosaur stylistically, but not on a megatheropod-sized megaraptorid imo.

I agree that the mohawk on the Maip looks kinda silly. Shame, as it looks like a pretty decent figure otherwise. I suppose you could always give it a haircut...

Also, is it just me or has CollectA really started loving brown lately?

One day we will know the truth about Spinosaurus... but not today.

Had they went with Austrolovenator instead of Maip I would be more interested, or Megaraptor, although Haolonggood has us covered with that one.

bmathison1972

I am super excited for the terror bird. Not sure about Maip. Never been a big fan of CollectA's large theropods (yes, yes pedants, I know a terror bird is a theropod) and at 26 cm the thing is going to be huge.

I'm guessing the Phorusrachos is the substitute for that? A pseudo-remake of their Kelenken?

I would definitely want the terror bird if I decide to start buying stuff again, but the style is very Geoworld.

Nah, that's like saying that Dynamoterror is a remake of Daspletosaurus. Totally different animals.

Kelenken and Phorusrachos are very often just lumped into the group term "Terror Birds." That doesn't happen for Dynamoterror and Daspletosaurus

Except for when they get lumped into Tyrannosauridae.

Kelenken(4) and Phorusrhacos(2) have very different skulls. It's far too great a stretch to call the latter an update of the former.

"Tyrannosauridae" is a clade. There is no "Terrorbirdidae" that involves Gastornis, Kelenken, Phorusrachos, and Titanis. It's a colloquial, and the actual genus of the bird doesn't matter as much to people.
