Large Sega amargasaurus..

Can anyone explain to me why someone bids so early in an auction?

1. Seller can't pull an auction without a fee if there are bids on it, should he decide to raise the cost

2. Maybe no-one else will notice and you can sneak by with one bid

Never thought about the fee situation. I know there are no rules against it, but it's just that I see people bid fighting for days and then in the last minute someone with deep pockets sweeps in and takes the stuff. Sometimes people bid so much for an item in the early days of the auction that it's price goes sky high. I always was curious about why people do that. The reason for doing this I thought was that the person could not wait or doesn't like to wait in front of the computer in the last minutes to snipe the item, and that was the only explanation I had for such behavior. Anyway, thanks for the answers guys.

A seller can cancel the bids first. Then they can cancel the auction.

Some people will also bid to spoil a BIN.

Sometimes I will place an early bid to stake out my territory so to speak, lol. It discourages sellers from pulling the listing early thinking no one is interested. It could also keep sellers from pulling a listing early after being offered a lower price privately, and keeps sellers from changing the auction to a low BIN when I am not watching. And just in case I forget about the auction when there are many days left...then I have a chance to win if I forget about it and no one else bids.

I have a question of my own: does anyone who posts an eBay link on this thread actively participate in that auction themselves? I ask because I have posted stuff before and people will behave as though I intend to bid on the item in the auction (no offense, just something I've noticed). But this puzzles me because I would not post an auction I was interested in, because I would want to keep that to myself to stop other people bidding and thus increase my chances of winning (yes, I'm crooked >:D)

For example, Seijun posted that Amargasaurus auction a few answers back. Here's my question to you, Seijun: do you intend to bid on that item? If so, I would be surprised because you would be decreasing your chances of winning it by sharing it with the whole forum.

So whenever I post something in this thread, it's stuff I'm not interested in buying, but I want to share with others who might be interested.

....Hope that makes sense :)

Ideally it works like this, you put in your maximum bid and let it ride.  But, people learned to wait til the last minute to catch a good deal. You enter in your high bid at the last minute and you might get it for less...before others can bid trying to beat the clock.

That process works for bidders with more or less money...they don't necessarily need deep pockets.

Seijun

I have no intent of bidding on the amarga :) I already have one  ;D

Yes, I'm pretty sure everyone does it like that.
Jurassic Park is frightning in the dark
All the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things'll harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend
Oh no

Yes that's right you can cancel the bids and then end your listing but they will remember that you cancelled a bid and you still have to pay they fee, and I know ugh

Some of them are uncommon, but I wouldn't say they're particularly rare.
