Patrx's Attempts at Painting Things

Hey, all!
With all the great models emerging on Shapeways of late, I've assembled a pretty extensive wish-list. Unfortunately, while it's at least somewhat feasible for me to afford the models themselves (with a bit of saving and frugality), the cost to have them shipped away, painted, and shipped back adds up quickly. So, I recently acquired some basic painting supplies and a few cheap dollar-store dinosaurs with the intent to practice my hand at painting. So far, the results are as follows - feedback and suggestions are welcome. Also, these haven't been coated with anything yet - I intend to pick up some matte varnish soon.

Hmm..what was the original color ? I think your getting areas where it's showing through.  Try spray painting them with a matte or flat black or grey, then letting it dry before brushing.  Ideally use just a bit of paint on the tip, it doesn't take much. Then you can dry brush.

Wow! Not to bad!
Thanks! I do need more practice, I think.

The Triceratops was originally orange, and the Stegosaurus was a lighter version of the new color scheme with green plates.

Not bad at all then, no orange is visible that I can see and you did a good wash as well.

Thanks! I may yet look into using spray paint for a dark base coat. For the Trike, I just used a brush, and thinned the paint out a little with water to make sure it covered everything.

Here's my first attempt to repaint an actual figure from my collection, the Safari Dracorex:

I really like the Dracorex, maybe that can be the female With the brownish color and You can get another one to be the male. ;)

Thanks! That's not a bad idea, but I'd probably end up re-painting the other one as well. It's not that the original colors are that bad, but there are lots of great details in the sculpt that the factory paint scheme just ignores, like the spikes and the osteoderms. In this case, I was thinking the new colors made sense for a young Pachycephalosaurus that needed to stay inconspicuous  :D

[Off Nick and Eddie's reactions to the dinosaurs] Oh yeah "Ooh, aah", that's how it always starts. But then there's running and screaming.

{about the T-Rex) When he sees us with his kid isn't he gonna be like "you"!?

Thanks, Jetoar! It's nice to finally have a gorgonopsid in my collection, and Galileo did a great job with this one. As for the paint, I think I got some good practice with the WSF material, so I'll be able to do something a bit more complex with the next one  :)

Thank you! The Shapeways WSF material certainly is unusual. You may find it easier to paint with a coat of primer or matte varnish on it. Uncoated, it's very absorbent, which could lead to some interesting effects as  well; kind of like watercolors soaking into dense paper. Good luck with your efforts! It would be interesting to see what you come up with in the future.

Plotosaurus, sculpted by Galileo Hernández Núñez. This is my first attempt to make this sort of base, and I think it turned out well enough.
