Just because a member slows down or becomes absent for awhile is no indication they were " pushed away".   People change every day, their interests, health, behavior, ect.. life in general takes priority as it should.  I have been a member of so many forums since around 2001 and this is the only one i check regularly anymore.  I took a sudden re-interest in an anime series i really loved once a couple years ago, signed back in to my old account made posts for 6 months then my interests shifted again.  it happens.

I agree, and this is the point I was trying to make to Rain about this mysterious 'absent member'.

I'm talking about Derek, whom was berated in the Rebor general discussion thread, and then stopped posting after that. He still logs on everyday, but is clearly hesitant to post. I wouldn't randomly say he was pushed away unless I have "proof". I'm saying he was pushed away because members somewhat attacked him for some distasteful comments he made on Rebor's facebook page.

I don't mean to start a debate, but it seems this "friendly" community has pushed away yet another forum member. Seriously guys, this happens way too often. He's gone from posting everyday to not posting at all..

EDIT: No, I'm not talking about Killekor

If you're talking about me. I'm not going to stop posting entirely. I have not been posting as much recently but this is because of something very minor compared to what happened with Killekor. I have already done 3 posts today (including this one), which is more than the 0 I posted yesterday.

If you're talking about CrypticPrism (which you most likely are), then I've not seen something that indicates he was 'pushed away from the forum'. I will say, though, that he has been less active nowadays.

I wouldn't have said the member was "pushed away" if they just randomly stopped posting..

Blade-of-the-Moon

Have you tried PMing him?

Justifiably so, given the nature of what he wrote.

An eye for an eye and we all go blind. I thought this forum was meant to be friendly, not form lynch mobs every time it's members are offended or disagree.. This is the third time I've noticed it happen.

Yeah, I'm still waiting on a response, although I think it's unlikely he'll resume posting.

I wasn't just referring to this incident, it's happend a few times before as well, this incident turned out a lot better than the previous one I'm thinking of.

But you're right, "attack" and "lynch mob" aren't appropriate in this case. However, I still feel the members in that thread acted incredibly unfriendly. They could've simply pm'd him their thoughts as opposed to posting screenshots of the incident and publicly "shaming" him.

Nope. Calling someone on their unscrupulous behaviour, especially when they're well old enough to know better, is not a case of "eye for an eye" or "lynch mobs." If anything, Derek McManus owes this forum an apology. I'd accept it.

What happened a few times before, something involving the same user you're referring here?

I don't think it was him but I'm not 100% sure. I've been looking but just can't find it. It was someone who said something which basically translated to "I don't like accurate dinosaurs they're boring", lots of members got mad and a few made personal attacks. Not surprising that those same members(who made personal attacks) were involved in this incident regarding Derek as well  ::).

I'll edit it in if I find it.

Sure. But having multiple members do it , is. Agreed that he owes this forum an apology but that doesn't make what you all did right. Publicly shaming someone won't get you an apology

suspsy

I see. You're saying that because multiple people expressed their disappointment over Derek's dishonesty about the DTF on Rebor's FB page, and his admission that he enjoyed stirring up hostility, that puts them in the wrong.

Way to go selectively read. No point in arguing with you lol.. If you actually want to talk instead of try to prove youre right by making petty passive aggressive comments you can pm me since it seems we're both just wasting space on this thread with bickering at this point..

Derek.McManus

Supsey if you expect a personal apology from me...to paraphrase from the movie Top Gun...your ego is writing cheques your body can't cash!

Derek.McManus

To all concerned, regarding my absence, I made intemperate remarks elsewhere that where seized upon by certain members, which is fine, I had a pm discussion with Blade of the moon in his capacity as a global moderator, he has my full permission to post those messages if he wishes to do so.

I will be perfectly honest at the cost of probably offending the silent majority here, I feel that even in the short time that I have been a member or posting that the forum has become somewhat less friendly, and I will cite the 'Killekor' case, I personally am somewhat embarrassed by this because I did let myself be annoyed by some of his posting but on reflection, as a father of five aged from five to nineteen I really should have had a lot more patience with the young person involved. I fear as a community we have been guilty of only being friendly to those who suit our point of view.

Regarding myself I know I annoyed, upset, pissed off, pick what suits some members but I will point to my 500 odd posts and suggest you find where I broke forum rules? If people want to rush around the internet looking for trouble it's like going out drinking at the weekend and looking for trouble you will inevitably find it!

For those that may be concerned, I have been very busy this month, my 80 year old father went to hospital for a routine operation and took two heart attacks the morning after and in the process of his recovery contracted an E Coli infection which yesterday resulted in the amputation of his right leg above the knee, I had to sign the consent forms and arrange for the disposal of his severed limb...so please forgive me if I find obsessing about Dinosaur toys to be of slight concern at the moment!

Regards to everyone on the forum

Derek

Agreed

and I'm sorry to hear that, glad to hear he's making a recovery. I hope everything works out for you.

Derek.McManus

Thank you for your concern, it is sincerely appreciated, my father is making a good recovery and to be bluntly honest the removal of the source of the infection has made a very noticeable improvement in my father's condition and general health.

I can only think of two members who I could identify based on the distinct way they express themselves, one of them being Killekor.

If you have a suspicion that somebody is using a fake account, you should report it to a moderator.

Name names then, don't be shy!

No, what I said was that I felt you owed an apology to the forum as a whole. You are the one, after all, who wrote "I just love to wind up the haters on that forum about pronated wrists and lack of feathers lol!" on Rebor's FB page. That's not a case of having a different point of view; that's an admission that you enjoy deliberately provoking people who value scientific accuracy. You're in no position to complain about a lack of friendliness towards you, Derek.

QuoteRegarding myself I know I annoyed, upset, pissed off, pick what suits some members but I will point to my 500 odd posts and suggest you find where I broke forum rules?

Since no one has accused you of breaking forum rules, this is a straw man.

Calling a portion of the people on the forum "haters" is kind of rude. We can be a bit overly obsessive about scientific details is what I think he was getting at but he just worded it poorly.

"3,000 km to the south, the massive comet crashes into Earth. The light from the impact fades in silence. Then the shock waves arrive. Next comes the blast front. Finally a rain of molten rock starts to fall out of the darkening sky - this is the end of the age of the dinosaurs. The Comet struck the Gulf of Mexico with the force of 10 billion Hiroshima bombs. And with the catastrophic climate changes that followed 65% of all life died out. It took millions of years for the earth to recover but when it did the giant dinosaurs were gone - never to return." - WWD
