I have the parts in my desk and look at them from time to time, I haven't found a still moment to continue the work on it, though. ):

So today, this happened:

I decided to work with paper mache and maybe real feathers, if I can get my hands on them, otherwise I'll use fake fur to imitate emu-like feathers for the body. I'll keep you guys posted.

Thank you, ARUL! :) I'm building the torso right now, I'll post pictures afterwards.

Very nice! It looks amazing so far.
A good reference would the drawings of Emily Willoughby, here deinonychosaurs are very accurate and have great image quality.

Also dont forget They had some flight feathers(or whatever the word is) on their hind limbs.

fabricious

I highly doubt that they still had functional flight feathers on the hind legs. After all, they were evolved to be ground-dwelling runners, no longer for flight or gliding. I am going to make proper arm feathering, though, since that is a more reasonable depiction.

I'll be posting pictures of the overall armature later, torso, tail and parts of the legs are in progress right now.

I didn't do flight feathers on the legs either..just made them thick and feathery like an owl's.

fabricious

I'd love to go the emu-cassowary-way, seeing it as emus are living in a similar environment as their extinct relatives. But I think I'll have to deal with whatever I can get my hands on. :D

Paper mache is a underrated medium. It looks great so far :)

Thanks guys! He is currently almost standing on his own.

fabricious

A little size comparison with my cats. The sculpture is 175cm long (the animal would be about two meters long) and 60cm tall at the shoulder.

Nice!  At this stage you can also be thinking about how the final piece will stand up on it's own.  You can insert wire rods and run them to the base.

If you could find some spray foam that bulk up the body, then you can carve it and paper mache over the foam base.

I am considering adding a wooden support to the torso, between the front part of the legs. As for the foam: I was considering it, but I'll most likely just bulk him out using old newspapers and masking tape (as I've done with the head and neck), I like the idea of using as many salvaged materials as I can. :)

The sculpture looks great!  It's very impressive!  Well done!

fabricious

Thank you, Sim!

By now, one side of the tail and the torso are covered in masking tape and newspaper, the arms have been added and the base of the toes are present as well. But enough for today, need to get up in the morning...

Patrx

Wow! It's already looking really great. Looking forward to seeing more progress :)
