the (disappointing) new Kaiyodo Capsule Q set(s)

With a small nod to the two pieces designed to display together (something I've wanted, albeit on a much larger scale (as in a complete herd of zebra, etc.) for years), a disappointing (to me) set featuring the usual redundancy and some poor quality sculpting.  There's also an odd/questionalbe nod to Jurassic World.

And FYI, a new non-prehistoric set is even more disappointing (to me) as it finally features some well sculpted world species but apparently without paint.

My source reports that the text on the world species page indicates that the image depicts prototypes, so the actual figures should be painted.  If true, this will be a very welcome set and hopefully new trend.

Roselaar

It's not so bad a set. Though certainly a step down from the previous prehistorically themed Museum Q Capsule sets.

Patrx

Ah, those are a little disappointing :/ The Pteranodon's not bad, though.

DinoLord

The Triceratops, T. rex, and Pteranodon look quite good. The other two I will wait until I have in hand to judge.

SBell

I will get the mosasaur. It will go well with the current marine reptiles. I don't need another T.rex and Triceratops, and can probably do without the pterosaur and skeleton.

And for those trying to see it, the link to the dino set is here: http://dai4.com/item/1898

I actually like this set. It does seem to be a step down in their usual quality, but I feel like the picture itself is pretty low quality and make the figures look a lot worse than they should. The past 3 dino sets all had much higher quality promo pics.

they look like something a lesser Japanese company would produce. but better than no Kaiyodos at all.

Not what we would have expected, but somehow I cannot really be disappointed by a new Kaiyodo set :).
It looks like this set is a bid out of band. Kaiyodo also does this with some extant animal sets.
It's possible that they continue to release other sets in the way they did with the first three volumes.

Thought it might be good to include the pic here.

Manatee

I quite like the mosasaur, but the others aren't too great. Likely just a nod to JW here.

BTW, wouldn't this set deserve a thread in the actual Dinosaur Toy boards, rather than in the Classifieds?

Done ;)

I don't think they're that bad. If it was any other brand besides Kaiyodo, they'd be pretty good. It's just that we have high standards for Kaiyodo since most of their stuff is usually amazing.

stargatedalek

I have to say I really like the colour schemes on the mosasaur and pteranodon.

Patrx

I do like that Triceratops the more I look at it. Most of Kaiyodo's ornithischians don't seem to have "cheeks", so this is a nice bit of variation. I guess what makes it a little disappointing, though, is that they've covered all these taxa before, in most cases very well.

Kayakasaurus

I don't know much about kaiyodo but these look very accurate and well done. Are they quite small? Probably can't get them here in the USA right?

Patrx

Quite small indeed - here's a photo of a Tyrannosaurus from a recent Kaiyodo set with a US penny for scale:

They turn up on Ebay and similar sites pretty frequently, so generally, they're not too hard to get in the States. There's also Clawmark Toys, they sell a lot of Kaiyodo dinosaurs.

DinoLord

Brett (the op) also helps those of us here in the states get these capsule sets for reasonable prices.

sauroid

i dont know why Kaiyodo has to make the same dinos/prehistoric reptiles over and over again after the older dino tales series went extinct, and as Manatee said, this set could just be cashing in on the JW hype.

brettnj, I for one like both of the new sets.
Do you think it's possible to change the thread's title and leave out the "(disappointing)" remark.
We should  leave it up to each single member to decide if he/she is disappointed or not.
It's not against you, but I'm afraid our DTF community is more and more establishing a reputation of being grumbling bad sports :-\.
