Is that Gephyrosaurus a confirmed species? If so, should I add it to the USL?

SBell

I think I have the coelacanths as Holophagus, but Swenzia sounds good too--it appears that they are related anyway!

Nah, Rebor never specified what it is, that's just what I call it. Gephyrosaurus is a stem-tuatara, but there were also a few true lizards around at the same time and it could be one of those.

What led you to reclassify the Safari Toob Rutiodon as Machaeroprosopus? I ask because I have a couple of the Toob Rutiodons too.

Not the right age--it's from the Permian.

Well, that would be like a Triassic flying fish with no anal fins...Schleich (fist shaking)

Also, the only Swenzia species is S latimerae? That must be one of the most uncreative names I've ever heard of...they named the species after a related genus!

It appears that the figures was based off of an image of Machaeroprosopus validus. The real question may be, what species of Rutiodon is the Dinotales one? Probably R carolinensis.

It is not unusual for Safari figures, especially for toobs, to be based on images in web searches. It's the reason why the 'Metriorhynchus' is more likely 'Suchodus' (for example).

The figure itself says "Rutiodon validus." Rutiodon has historically been a wastebasket genus and most species have now been removed from it. R. validus is one of those, now being considered a species of Machaeroprosopus. So it was nice of Safari to include the full species name! Honestly the Kaiyodo might also be based on Machaeroprosopus, but I don't know enough about phytosaurs to be sure. A paleontologist I know told me once that Rutiodon should just be ignored and all its species reallocated. If it keeps anything, it'll probably be R. carolinensis.

It's coming! As Sean said, it's Permian, and I haven't gotten through the Triassic yet!

'Latimerae' means "Latimer's," right? I think they just named it after Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer. If anyone's earned multiple taxonomic honorifics, she has!

That's where I put my Kaiyodo. Until there is reason otherwise to change the genus...which seems to have many fewer species than it once did!

I have to agree, the non-dinos have always appealed to me more. And I love the Estemmenosuchus. It was a massive hunt for years (and its associated Scutosaurus--I had to get the damage pieces in a separate parts auction...). I can't understand why it hasn't been made more often.

Although, I have often been tempted to take apart my (spare) figure and make the legs fit right. It has always felt like the are on backwards or something.

I actually agree that the Marx is a superior sculpt. I just don't collect monochromes as a general rule. So I have the Bullyland Lambeosaurus even though the Invicta remains a more elegant sculpt, because the Invicta--as far as I know--was never offered in a painted version. Similarly, I think the Marx Cynognathus is at least as good as the Starlux or Play Visions versions, but it doesn't come with paint. I think I only have three uncolored figures, but that's mostly because they're figures that are intended to be painted that I haven't gotten to yet.

As for you Sean--quit yer gloating!  ;D
