Hi,
Recently, in the Schleich new for 2017 thread have been a discussion about last year Schleich Dunkleosteus, so, i decided to create this thread.

I have that Dunkleosteus version, and, with my Pentaceratops, it's One of my favorite Schleich models (i'm searching the Kentrosaurus), it's a good sculpt, with an interesting color scheme.

Bigger than a camarasaurus,
and with a bite more stronger that the T-Rex bite,
Ticamasaurus is certainly the king of the Jurassic period.

With Balaur feet, dromaeosaurus bite, microraptor wings, and a terrible poison, the Deinoraptor Dromaeonychus is a lethal enemy for the most ferocious hybrid too.

A reddish brown at best, but not red, unless you repaint it.  It's also kinda odd thatyou would call it interesting, given how colorful many of your repaints are.

There are clearly more attractive colorschemes, some used by the Dunkleosteus of other companies.
Jurassic Park is frightning in the dark
All the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let T. Rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things'll harm me
'Cause they sure don't act like Barney
And they think that I'm their dinner, not their friend

...well, I have 5 Dunkleosteus in my collection and Schleich (to be honest) is the worst of them all..

My top list is:

1) Paleozoo (the paint work is gorgeous)  8)

2) Favorite vinyl (impressive on naked eyes)

3) Favorite Softmodel (a classic)

4) Safari (well sculpted)

5) Schleich ( it looks like a mummified fish and it's quite cartoonish...  ::) )

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Probably the best Dunkleosteus is by Sean Cooper (but I don't have it in my collection..  :-\ )

I don't think so, i like his sculpt, and, for me (many users Will not think so), this Dunkleosteus is better than the WS one (that Dunkleosteus model is too fishy).

What I do not like about Dunkleosteus Schleich is that he has articulated jaws. I find it excessive that he has that feature a dunkleosteus model.

Well, it is a fish!
So a fish model shouldn't be fishy, huh.  8)

I know! But all the Dunkleosteus that i seen have a too fishy Skin, the Schleich Dunkleosteus have scales. Anyway, it's also more detailed and It have an articulated jaw.
If i look at the Dunkleosteus models photos posted by Robingoodfellow, i prefear the Schleich One.
I'm not saying that Schleich is the best brand of the world, but have do some good models, i have the Pentaceratops, and it's fantastic, i have Repainted it (in the same color scheme of Mr.Penta), unfortunately, i don't have their Kentrosaurus.

Why not? It's interesting see a Dunkleosteus model with articulated jaw, the articulation it's Well made (ok, the inside of the mouth Is not Well sculpted).

Yes,. They have... But, for me the Dunkleosteus models with fishy Skin are... Boring! too many prehistoric Reptiles with fishy Skin (clearly, at some species i prefear fishy Skin)! I like that the Schleich version have scales.

I think it's terrible, and also one of the best prehistoric figures Schleich has ever made. The colours are boring, the sculpting is exaggerated, and the design is woefully inaccurate even if moderately unique.

I've said it before, but I think the main positive thing to be said for the Schleich Dunkleosteus is that it is a detailed sculpt of a non-dinosaur. I think it gets much more credit than it deserves because people are more attuned to dinosaur anatomy than to placoderm anatomy. The sculpt is well executed but wildly inaccurate. The head doesn't have enough skin on it and makes it look distinctly un-dead (but decidedly not alive). To see what I mean, take a few seconds to look over the following two fish heads:

These are both bowfins (Amia calva). The bowfin has extensive dermal armor, but that doesn't mean you see every seam in the armor in the living fish. Moreover, you have to squint to see the formidable teeth showcased by the isolated skull. Dunkleosteus tooth plates would have been more prominent, but it seems really unlikely that they would have been completely exposed.

The tail is biomechanically suspect.

The scutes are speculative to the point of implausibility.

The fins aren't known from Dunkleosteus, as far as I know, but the ones on the figure exhibit a morphology inconsistent with its phylogenetic position.

The Dunk is definitely Schleich's best 2016 figure, but that's a pretty low bar. The Favorite and Safari versions are far superior. So are the Paleozoo (which I haven't bought because of the price), the Kaiyodo (in a scale I don't collect), and the forthcoming CollectA mini. It's undeniably pretty, and I own it just because I want to support everyone who makes fish. But it's not a good Dunkleosteus. Merely a good Schleich. I find myself regretting that I was so kind to it in my dtb review.

I just thought it was interesting you were taken with the color at all when I find the sculpt of this model to be the most notable thing about it. I actually like the sculpt, but only because it's "cool", in the way that Japanese kaiju are cool. I'm not as much of a stickler for scientific accuracy as most other forum members are, if the Nessies in my plesiosaur collection are any indication. The Sean Cooper dunky though, OMG. One of the most expensive things on my very extensive wish list. Hopefully I'll get to own it someday... you know, when I'm independently wealthy.

Don't quote me on this but I recall reading that Dunkleosteus' armor was coated in very small spines (like tack small), which is why it isn't more often depicted with flesh covering it's armor.
