As you've propably all seen by now, Safari ltd. is releasing a feathered Tyrannosaurus model, and I plan on modifying it. But as I've never done this before I decided to gain some experience first.

So I looked through my collection for a cheap model with an easy adjustment needed. Then I found this Triceratops:

I settled on giving it a shorter tail, better intergrating the thigh into the body and editing the shape of the spine a bit.


With the sculpting done I gave the model a new paint job to see how well the newly sculpted parts integrated with the original sculpt. Overall I'm pretty pleased with the outcome, only thing is that nect time I have to find a way to add scales. I'll give texture stamps a try I think.

Nice improvement! Scale stamps are pretty easy to do, look for "Blue Stuff" on ebay, it's a easy way to make temporary and quick molds. It becomes soft with boiling water, then it hardens around the components you want to copy and makes really easy to repeat patterns, the epoxy stuff doesn't stick to it.
For bumps PVA glue dots work surprisingly well!

In my first post I mentioned that I was planning on customizing the Safari ltd. Tyrannosaurus, however I instead I decided to purchase the Carnegie model. I chose to do so because I prefer the headsculpt on it and the planned customisations on it will be a lot easier to do.

I the original pose of it wasn't all that bad in my opinion, all I wanted to do is make sure it didn't lean on it's tail. Fixed those things with some boiling water, it actually stands, pretty soundly like this.


The overall sculpt was too skinny fro Tyrannosaurus, so most of the edits to the model consisted of adding bulk. I did so tho the tail, metatarsals, stomach as well as gradiating the thigh into the body more gradually. The feathering is based on some of my older tyrannosaurid drawings, with a mostly naked tail and naked legs allowing for some play in the coloration of the tail.

As for the paint job, I decided to go for gray scaly parts with countershading and some darker stripes on the tail. The head is based on a drawing I haven't released yet, with a light spot fading into the base color interrupted with stripes of the main color and darker brow- and noseridges. There also is a patch on the throat that matches the eyes in color to make the overall thing easier to look at. The feathers were harder to paint, I originally made them a brown with darker highlights, but this didn't stick so I made them a more greyish color.

I like the placement of the feathers.
The changeover of the feathers to the naked skin looks good on the body.
But maybe the head could have been a bit more subtle?
The paintjob you gave it is very complementing to the figure.
