50 voters now! 4 days remain to pick your favorites. I expect to lock the poll for voting around midnight eastern US time on Sunday. I'm gratified to see that no JW toys have yet garnered any votes.

Well, you did forget the only one that was an improvement over the previous versions (the large Indominus).

I didn't include it on the grounds that it's neither a dinosaur nor a prehistoric animal.

Well, looking at this list really made me appreciate what a tremendous year 2016 was for prehistoric animal figures! There were far too many to choose from. How spoiled we are!

The only way I could vote was to treat this in a very cavalier manner. I'm sure if I voted again in a few days, trying to replicate exactly the way I have just now voted, I'd choose a number of different figures.  :-\

But you included the smaller indominus, and the other JP hybrids, and the REBOR JP raptor? None of those are based on real dinosaurs either. Just saying.

Well, you've got me there. I didn't assemble this list all in one day, and my mood must have changed with respect to fake dinosaurs. I can add the big Indominus if anybody actually wants to vote on it. I find myself wishing again that people had raised all these on the thread where I explicitly solicited contributions. I will definitely never run this poll again.

As long as we're "just saying" things, the Rebor JP raptor is based on a real animal, just on a self-consciously outdated notion of it. It's not completely invented.

All fair points, and I doubt it would have gotten any votes anyway, I just felt it was worth noting alongside the others and figured I'd get a jab in at the line as a whole while I was at it.

Exactly. I was hoping for more JP fans to vote for "Winston" when I proposed its inclusion in the poll.

The thing is that there are already licensed JP raptors, so people who collect JP figures have no reason to be interested in Winston if not reason to detest it since it's not filling a void that didn't exist. If you want a JP raptor get a Kenner one, don't buy an "homage" from an unlicensed manufacturer, it's literally theft of the Universal IP.

I'm no lawyer, but I sincerely doubt that a hypothetical lawsuit by Universal against Rebor would hold up in court. As I understand copyright law, you have to pretty much straight-up copy a design, detail for detail, minus a slight amount of wiggle room in order to get anywhere. You also have to prove that your design was the first of its kind, and again, I doubt that Steven Spielberg was the first person to show a scaly, Deinonychus-headed Velociraptor. Rebor's toy is not "literally theft of the Universal IP" in that case.

They admitted that they based it on the JP design, if Universal did sue them they would almost certainly win as this is a very different scenario from the Papo copies. Papo claimed coincidental resemblance that their figures were based on established tropes of the animals, REBOR has admitted publicly that these designs are based on the ones from Jurassic Park.

tanystropheus

I wonder if Hasbro could be sued by Papo for blatantly copying their Allosaurus design...

That's because they don't exist, for all practical purposes. I don't understand why folks are trying to make fetch Recur happen.

Despite they are not at Collecta's level, not all Recur are bad.
I couldn't vote for any Recurs as best 2016 figure but Ouranosaurus, Smilodon, Quetzalcoatlus and Dimetrodon are not bad at all.
You should see them with your eyes.

Recur Dimetrodon is the only model on the market with a strong synapsid  look (others have a reptilian look, that's quite wrong).

If so, Todd Marshall could sue Papo for copying his design and then breaking its wrists.

But honestly I don't think either case would be very successful.

The Papo Allosaurus does bear resemblance to Todd Marshall's Allosaurus.  It also bears resemblance to Brett Booth's Allosaurus: link

Brett Booth made a blog post where he mentioned the figure's similarity to his and Todd Marshall's work, and wondered if Papo used some of his own designs: link

Silvanusaurus

It's a real shame they didn't base the Allosaurus on a better design.

I don't fault you one bit for not liking Recur's products, but that statement of yours really doesn't make any sense.

I like Recur, they have a certain charm to them unlike Geoworld. I just wish there is a place to order them here in the US :-[
